The subject IMO is to important and deserves a separate thread (sorry Slavin for hijacking yours).
What the heck means - waiting for the opinion of academic anesthesiologist - I know that in private means nada (except - hey dude I believe that is not a good candidate for surgery - and the answer - "cleared for surgery" BS).

It implies something that is much more than a technician. Basically, a doctor who is an expert in perioperative medicine.

I think that should imply that WE give an advice that should be followed by the other physician that asked for the consult. Is it like that?

It should be. When was the last time you followed the cardiology consult's recs?

 True - but the cardiologist after the consult is done...He doesn't care if we take in consideration his opinion...We on the other side still have to deal with the patient and the guy who asked for the consult. A kind of different I believe....

There is a small, single, exception to these explanations.

Here at Mayo, historically, every staff physician is called a Consultant, not a Staff Physician, no matter what specialty. As in, "go ask your Consultant". You don't say "go ask your Staff" like in other academic center. Or as in "Who is the Consultant covering that OR?".

So when you come to Minnesota and hear Consultant, that just means Staff. Just a quirk of Mayo history.
