Hi SDN,

One of the clubs I'm heavily involved in is student-run with no faculty-adviser. Should I list one of the current eboard members as a contact in my applications? If the people I've worked with have graduated/will have graduated by the time I apply, should I use a person who is going to be an eboard member?

Thanks!

Who is the link to the University? Is there a staff member in charge of clubs? I'd personally avoid using students...although I know that at least one used me as a contact on his med school app....

I'll try to find out who the staff member of clubs is. However, how would a supervisor or adviser be able to verify my involvement?

I had this question too ... thanks everyone/

I have a whole bunch of random activities that I did while in/after college, for instance, a relay for life group. I listed them all under one activity and put me as the contact. I have also used other students (for fraternity volunteering) and no one has said a thing. I don't think they care in the slightest as long as the activity it isn't something big and important they use directly, like research or shadowing.

Same here. For personal hobbies I just listed myself as the contact, and for student-run clubs with no faculty advisor, I listed the prez as the contact. One of my activities entries was a collection of hobbies/clubs, and I put down a random friend of mine as a contact in the text box in case they wanted one. Hasn't raised any eyebrows so far, and I know some of my school fact-checked.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about this at all. Just make sure that whoever you put down won't be like "Jaisenclaisen? Never heard of him!". And also make sure you put down the right info--my freshman year an email from an adcom asking about an applicant by name went out to one of my clubs entire listserve, some 200+ people.

Thanks for the replies!

Do Adcoms use the contacts for a reference or is it just to verify our dates and hours? I don't think we've ever kept track of our time in some of my clubs.

I asked my college advisor if I could list her as a contact person for certain student run clubs and hobbies and she was fine with it. Schools didn't seem to mind either. 🙂

I did this A LOT. For anything that didn't have a specific contact, like grouped categories, and I listed him as the contact. I figured my undergrad advisor could verify my participation in these activities, so why not? It never seemed to hurt me.
