Contact from programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't really think this thread was about celbrating and bragging. For me it was about comparing which programs are sending this BS to everyone. Of course you get excited when a program tells you that you are on their rank list - but, now we all know to take it with a grain of salt.

Sometimes people just like to compare experiences and this is a place where many of us are going though the same thing. If you think it's gross why bother reading it?

Agreed. The info I've posted hasn't been about bragging at all, and I hope it hasn't come off that way. Along with loveumms, I think it is nice that we all have a place to compare the information we have. As HB said, none of this means anything until 3/15, and all the crud they are sending out isn't going to get me to change my rank list, but I enjoy reading it nonetheless.

Exactly. I just use the thread to try and decode all of the garbage. Like "good luck in the match." At first, I didn't know if that meant "thanks but no thanks." And if a program is calling, sending letters and of course the strip-o-grams, while I get squat from them, I know not to get my hopes up too high. I won't change my rank list any, but it won't be such a disappointment when they pass on me. Besides, it helps me to get through the rough patches that all the buspar and lexapro aren't touching! 😉

I think this thread is kinda gross. I'm definitely glad for everyone, and I know this is maybe the only place you/we have to celebrate these contacts where people truly understand the implications of what it all means, but I donno.

I got stuff from places too. Great. None of it means anything until 3/15.

Sorry for being a buzzkill. I just don't think that comparing/bragging about/crying about/thinking about any of this silliness has any merit until match day.

[/downer mode]

so i'll admit to perhaps overindulging in some braggery with my last post and apologize for offending anyone. It is the anonymous nature of this forum and, as you astutely pointed out, the fact that it is the one gathering place for colleagues who truly understand and appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that have gone into what (i hope) is the happy payoff for us all come match day. None of us just got handed any of our "successes", we worked our butts off for them.
That being said, I do think this is a useful/helpful thread and certainly not all just bragging/whining, everyone is simply stressed out about the match and looking for any meaning in this whole thing. Whether that is to be found or not is another issue. Maybe to make my last post a little helpful I wanted to add that I heard from one of these programs only because I emailed the PD telling them that they were my #1 choice. So if anyone is debating whether letting a program know they are their number one choice is a good idea or not I would say go for it. Programs love to hear this and they may just respond with something positive...or not...but as they are your #1 anyways its not like it is going to change anything and maybe it will even result in you feeling a little better about things.
Good luck to all.

I probably came across as overly critical in that post, and I blame it on global warming. Sorrry if my tone was a little off.

I definitely wasn't trying to accuse anyone in particular of anything (sorry if you felt that way gogiants, my post wasn't directed at you personally) and I'm not trying to say the thread is completely without merit. It's true that there is some valuable info to be gained by this discussion (i.e. the Penn State stuff that doesn't seem quite right etc.). I just kinda feel like there's a difference between trying to stratify feedback in order to translate it into potential ranking tiers and just patting yourself on the back for the sake of it. But since this is the only place where people really understand what's going on, I do understand that it can feel good to celebrate positive feedback with people that appreciate what it means.

We're all super stressed about this whole thing I know, especially now that almost everything is out of our hands and our fates are being determined by committe behind closed doors. No fun at all. At least during the interview season we had control over how we did, now there's nothing but thumb twiddling until March 15th. For this control freak, this is gonna be almost unbearabe. I wanna know, and I wanna know NOW.

Sorry if I offended anyone. We're all in this cruddy situation together, and I wish everyone the best of luck on match day.

Got a form e-mail from UNC with a link to the video they showed us during the recruitment visit.

got a funny letter from tufts today. (funny as in hmm... not haha funny)

Com'on, calm down everyone. I am assuming everyone has been using this forum since their "pre-med" time, and by now we should all know the purpose of these threads are. At least, as a future anesthesiologist, we should all know the ABC for this site: that is "accused, brag, and condemn".. lol.. sorry if i offened anyone. 😀

Anyone getting any love lately? I thought the program contacts would have picked up this week, but all I've heard is crickets.

Letter from PD (typed up by secretary) at Nebraska.

Now if I could only pick a #1 and stick with it...keep chaning around my top 3.

No words, no generic thanks for coming just some dumb calender for UPMC? And I got mine late to boot!!! Does that mean I made it on the list at the tail end?😎 My wife laughed at me when she saw the calender in the mail.😀 She's laughing and I am going in for an EGD due to my new ulcer that a Mack truck can park in. At least someone in the family is keeping a clear head. C'mon March 15.

Has anyone heard anything recently? I'm disappointed by the lack of post interview recruitment. I really expected the flood gates to open last week and at least a few programs give me some clues as to where I stand.

Got a personal handwritten letter from the PD at URochester, today I may add. Cuttin it close there.

I have recieved some emails, some written and typed letters, and a couple of calls. My #2 (U. Wash) said that I was "ranked to match."

The confusing comments were from the chair of my #1 who said that I was "ranked" and that he was "hopeful that I would match." These are pretty generic comments, and I probably shouldn't read anything into them. Any thoughts?

Did anyone else hear anything from Virginia Mason (besides the 2 generic typed letters)?

Program directors are more savvy at the ranking game than the applicants - believe what they tell you at your peril.

Remember what the otherwise forgettable Richard Marx sang...

Cause it don't mean nothin'
The words that they say
Don't mean nothin'
These games that people play
No, it don't mean nothin'
No victim, no crime
It don't mean nothin'
Till you sign it on the dotted line...
