Has anyone received any contact (phone, e-mail, letters, etc) from any of the programs where they interviewed, particularly any top tier programs?

I know that the number of programs contacting people has gone down in recent years (since it's a violation of the SF match rules), but I'm just wondering if anyone's gotten any recruiting pitches or feedback regarding their chances. This type of thing is still common in other surgical sub-specialties (ortho, ENT, etc).

For any of the current residents, did you hear anything from any of your top choices when you applied? Should we be concerned if we haven't been contacted?

Don't worry if you don't hear from programs. It is atypical for ophthalmology programs to contact applicants.

When I applied, a few called to state that they were glad I interviewed and gave me a second opportunity to ask any questions; however, none stated where I was ranked or that I was offered a spot.

I interviewed at 16 programs (most pretty good), and I have not heard one inappropriate word. I think (and hope) places are playing it honest. If not...hey, there is always next year.

But you are right, one of my friends going into Neurosurgery has been contacted multiple times.

2 weeks and counting!!!!!

I guess that what I said about it being against the SF match rules for programs to contact applicants is not correct.

According to the SF match rules, programs (or applicants) can make "Statements of Intent" as long as they are unilateral, voluntary, and unconditional ("Neither party may ask the other for a commitment.") But it is permitted for a program to say "You are among the best applicants I have seen so far and I appreciate meeting you."

Unfortunately, no one has done that for me. I interviewed at over 15 programs and haven't heard a peep from any of them.

It seems that most people have not heard anything since interviews. I guess they all have so many good applicants they just don't have to contact or recruit anyone. The closest I got to hearing back from a program was receiving a reply to my thank you letter from a residency director at one of the Texas programs. It basically just said "...we will consider you highly..."

I did get a letter from the chairman at Vanderbilt, but it seemed rather generic so I wouldn't be surprised if everyone they ranked got one. Several other programs I interviewed at specifically said they don't contact applicants following interviews.
