Contact Professors of Interest Prior to Application/Interviewing?

Would you advise contacting professors at a school before you apply to an MD/PhD program there? And if so ... what's important to ask/know? And at what stage in the application process do you want to do this, if I'm applying for matriculation in Fall 2014?

I wouldn't advise this if your purpose is getting an "in." You probably aren't going to get much of a response either as professors are extremely busy people. If you have specific questions about the program itself, you should email the program's admissions office.
