I am hoping that some of you who are out in the real world and practicing can give me some input on future jobs. I am currently a CA-2 and I know some may say what the heck are you thinking about jobs for but hear me out. My family and I already know the city we want to move to when I finish. Is it reasonable to contact a few groups in the area now and let them know that we plan to move to city x and would like to let them know I am interested in their group. I also have some interest in peds anesthesia although I am not sure if I want to pursue a fellowship. Is it worth asking these groups if they have any needs for peds or any other fellowship training for that matter in advance.
Am I crazy to contact them this early?

No you're not crazy. You can contact them now, and get your name into the mix. You are not likely to get any kind of offer this year unless it is in a smaller city with a high need. Talking about pedi fellowship training is a good idea. If they would like you to join after doing a pedi fellowship, they should also be willing to pony up more $$$ for the extra year of training you would be doing.

Start contacting them now and get an idea of who is out there in that city and what type of work they do, the compensation they offer, etc. You will then be ahead of the game when it comes time to decide between which offer you will take.

Thanks UT for the reply.
With regards to peds fellowships, are there groups out there outside of childrens hopitals and academics that hire pedi trained anesthesiologists. I really like doing both kids and adults. I am considering pedi b/c I enjoy doing sick kids. I don't necessarily want to do only kids all the tie. I realize that if I am pedi trained the group with throw most pedi cases my way but occasionally doing adults woul be nice also. Is this unrealistic?
