Des moines group change?

This decision will cost the hospital at min 100k per week in anesthesia staffing fees. The new company taking over is likely taking zero hit in terms of losing money on this. I just estimating it will cost a min $4k per sit to staff 7-3p even with crna only ($500/hr crna locums fees , lodging etc) each room.

And OR shut down means the hospital loses between 30-100k in revenue as well. In addition to the anesthesia locums fees.

So sad that hospital admins are naive. But it’s not our responsibility to teach them. It’s now our obligation to take advantage of them.
Yea but if they all f—- up and bankrupt themselves the taxpayers will just be made to bail them out

Jeez $425/hr for locums. (Waiting for aneftp to say how it should be $1000/hr).
I don’t chase high hourly pay. You gotta chase guarantees and low workload to make it sustainable.

Only a fool does case after case all night solo even for some ridiculously big hourly rate. That’s not long term solution to make them pay.

I prefer to sleep and charge them.

You want easy. You don’t want hard.

$400+/hr for cardiac is bare bottom. Same for peds. For an AMC in a pinch like this, no one should bargain for less than $500/hr daytime. Going in as a scab and accepting undermarket rates really hurts everyone (except Vituity).

This hospital made a poor choice and is learning the consequences. Don't bail out a C-suite that thinks they are above market forces.
Depends how quickly they come to their senses.

Des Moines Iowa is completely different environment than Memphis which is a real city.

Considering they are advertising 700-725k as the base means they know they have an uphill battle to claim to get the the situation under control.

Says that FT “includes 45 scheduled hours a week”. Wonder if they’re hinting at unscheduled hours.

I think the location will hurt them more than they think. 700k is nice, but income tax in Iowa makes that more like 625 in a no income tax state. Since the location is probably bottom 10% desirability, and not a lot of people are likely to have ties to the area that aren’t already living there…the pay doesn’t make up for that imo. Plus the difference is reduced due to progressive taxation in general.

Another huge factor: spouses that work. This isn’t SF/LA/NYC/DC/Miami. Not a lot of high powered careers will have opportunities in Des Moines.

Even reading the blurb it didn’t sound like a cool place to move to. Apologies for any Des Moines people that may be reading this comment, I’m sure it’s fine, but it’s not a place new grads are going to check out because they always thought about moving there and I don’t think the pay is enough to make people move there despite not liking the location.

And agreed with others. If you’re going to do locums for a hospital actively screwing over your physician colleagues ask for a bit more. 500 an hour seems like a nice place to start. If nothing else it sends a message if people respond to their ads saying they’ll only do it for 500 an hour.

Des Moines has an airport so I could see them getting locums easily enough, but living and working there long term would probably only be desirable for those who believe maga/qanon type things. In places like that you’re usually going to be inundated with that trash basically every day at work. I’d probably want additional pay beyond average for putting up the annoyance.

I suppose if I had kids I’d also have to factor in the cost of sending them to boarding school and out of state tuition.

I’d compare Des Moines Iowa to Rochester New York and even Augusta Georgia. All 3 of these have major universities based jobs in those cities.

Cities with around 200k in the city and 800k in the metro area.

But i guess the main difference is Rochester is 1 hr from buffalo. And Augusta u can reach the sprawling outer suburbs of Atlanta in 80 minutes (Atlanta is 120 miles away)

These are mid level cities. People live in these cities. More bang for the buck in terms of cost of living.

I went to high school college and med school in what was than big 8 country in Midwest.

Grew up in the northeast east Pre k-8 with bars in school windows in middle school.

It’s a different life in Midwest than the tough northeast.

I wouldn’t call people who live in Des Moines trash. That’s like Bay Area people calling people who live in Sacramento trash (I’m very familiar with both of those cities as well)

You are under estimating the dearth of diverse culture in the flat Midwest. That is worth a $$ premium, just like taking a job in true rural areas. Unless someone is from the Midwest, has family a 3 hr drive away, or is lazy in their job search they should be looking for more.

It will be very hard to pull new people accustomed to the urban/suburban life of major metropolitan areas to such an area.

You're familiar with everything brah.
I’ve been around the block. I’ve either done locums or lived full time in cities I mentioned. Thus why my network is so large.

I’m not under estimating. I think you are confusing a true small city say Iowa city vs Des Moines Iowa.

Des Moines is the capital. It has more jobs than the much smaller Iowa city (both cities around 90 min apart). Des Moines is not a true rural area. It’s just shocking to hear mis informed people talk about this. I’d live in Des Moines before I’d live in Iowa city (been to both multiple times). F. I’d live in Des Moines before I got live again in Memphis again.

I cite Rochester ny as a similar city. I’m very familiar with Rochester ny. Very similar cities in terms of city size and metro area.

People live in these places for reasons. Des Moines is actually growing. As hard it’s to believe from you city/suburban folks.

If the money is right. Someone in the area will take the Iowa job either full time or 1099.

It would take a lot for me to have to fly out to Iowa to do locums. Why? I lose one day of travel going there and lose one day of travel flying back. That’s potentially 10-20k of work I’m losing traveling.

I didn’t say it was rural. I said in comparison to urban / suburban areas there is a dearth of cultural diversity. I’ve been there so I also know what I’m talking about.

And I agree, at this stage of life I would also choose Des Moines over Memphis if those were my only 2 options. But in this market, there are likely better choices for many people. And that isn’t even taking into account upper-midwest winters.

Exactly. That is why I said “someone is from the Midwest, has family a 3 hr drive away, or is lazy in their job search”. I’ll add on people looking to get away from urban / suburban areas.

Again this is my point. For joining an understaffed job, with there likely being an expectation of lots of hours worked because the health system decided to FAFO, the pay needs to be there. And the way it is posted right now, the money just ain’t there when you look at the whole picture.

So in summary, glad you agree with me.

Des Moines does not have a major university.

I have zero interest in Iowa regardless of money.

Maybe younger version of me who liked to fly out for assignment. Theses days I prefer to be with 1 hr of driving distance from home.

You lose 2 days of work while flying.
