Hi all. My name is Ashley and I have been working as a retail pharmacy technician for about 3 years. Last year I went ahead and got PTCB certified in order to continue working in Illinois. However, in May I finished undergrad and will now be attending Midwestern COP in August. My certification is set to expire in January 2019. My question is, are there any benefits to keeping up and renewing my pharmacy tech certification now that i'm accepted into a pharmacy program? I know there are a few hoops that I need to jump through in order to keep my certification active in order to not take the exam again.

Thanks,
Ashley

Ashley, if that is you on your profile page I suggest you change it to protect anonymity online.

As for your question, I wouldn't see any benefits to renewing your certification given the fact you already got accepted to a pharm program.

Do the state's laws allow you to get an intern license before the tech license expires? If yeah then let it lapse. Otherwise it might be worth renewing if your retail pharmacy pays the renewal fee and/or there's a higher pay as certified tech at that pharmacy.

I’m actually not employed right now and looking for work, but I was under the impression that you would have more opportunities open to you (hospital) as opposed to retail with the certification which was the only reason I was considering keeping up with it. I can get a pharmacy student license in August though once school starts.

Generally yes, but if you have an intern license it supersedes the PTCB so don't worry about it, especially if you're the one that's going to be paying the fee to renew it.

Hey Guys,
Any of you from California know how to get a pharmacy technician job at Kaiser? I'm a pre-pharm student with a California pharmacy technician licence that i got through CVS's pharmacy technician training program, I was able to get licensed but only in the state of California. Has anyone had any luck getting a tech job at kaiser? It seem pretty much impossible and I would really like some hospital pharmacy experience it would look really good on my pharmacy school applications. Any advise helps.
