Dear fellow residents (3rd year)
I will like to hear your input and opinion.
The minimum of continuity clinic patient is 1650. Right now is February and I have 1,100. At the rate I am going, I will have maybe 1,400 at the end of June. I am getting nervous since my clinic time is already maximized, but nobody can controll no shows. Has anybody heard what can happen comes June and the 1650 has not been met ? can the program hold graduation pending completion of the minimum clinic patients ? I will appreciate any ideas or if you know of anyone in that same situation?.

So you need 550 more patients. Presuming 15 pt's per day (some more some less due to no shows), X 3 days a week X 14 weeks = 630. Based on those calculations you should be fine. However, you're worried otherwise you wouldn't have posted. Things to do to increase this number is use one of your electives (if you have any left) to do a clinic month. I did this my second year and it bumped my number considerably. Also double book, double book, double book! Best of luck.

Do you have any elective time coming up? If you have a free elective month, spending half of it just being in clinic, every day, seeing walk-ins and same-day-sick in addition to your panel patients, may be enough to get you closer to 1650. One of my co-residents had transferred after PGY-1 from an ortho residency, and that was going to be the back up plan if he looked like he might not have 1650 by the time he graduated. (He made it, with plenty of room to spare. 😎)

Another idea is to get your clinic schedule a day or two in advance, and call each patient to remind them to come. It might be worth a try.

If you don't have 1650, I believe that they can hold you and have you graduate a month or two later. Not having 1650 patient encounters by graduation is a bit of a red flag....you should be able to get that in 3 years fairly easily. What is your no-show rate? How many patients a day are you seeing? 😕

The situation is that since it is a new program and there was no preceptor for a full day for a while , they still only have one full day a week, and I was not assigned to that until October, the rest are half days(3 days a week),so doing an entire month is out of the question.
I also have a contract to start working, and that is another issue why I have to finish on time.

Ohhhhh..... 🙁 That sucks.

Have you spoken to your program director? He may be able to figure something out.

Our program had a couple residents need to do an extra clinic month several years ago....it was fixed and hasn't been an issue for the last 3-4 years. But yes, they can hold you back if you don't hit the 1650.
