I have been presented with a 100% pain contract at a private practice.

For the most part I am happy with pay, benifits ect.

However, there is a clause in the contract that if I leave before the two year contract is up I must pay back the moving expenses and the recruiter fee - which it doesn't state the amount in the contract. Has anyone ever heard of this?? Is this a normal contract provision if a recruiter finds you a job??

It also states that I cannot provide any type of medical services for pay outside the clinic, such as GA locum work on weekends, or a vacation week without the directors approval. Is this normal??

Thanks for any input.

Short answer is YES.

But I'm sure you can work out the work outside the clinic part. Tell them you will cover your own malpractice for additional work. `

Is the offer in Las Vegas?

It's not uncommon for you to pay back the recruiter fee if you leave before a specified time. You may try to get them to pro-rate it, and the amount should be spelled out in the contract. Yet another good reason not to use a recruiter. I honestly can't figure out why someone would use a recruiter unless they are clueless or not willing to do a little legwork. It's not that difficult..

It's also not an uncommon clause to prevent you from outside work without approval of the higher-ups. You're working for them, and they don't want anything taking you away from them, and they want to keep you in your place.

Thank you very much for the input - it made me feel much better about the contract and my situation.

After I sign I will gladly post my 'dumb and dumber' move that I made regarding the recruiter so that others may benifit. I agree that if at possible go it alone.

And no - the job is not in Las Vegas.

stop!! wait!!!
not normal to me

dont sign that contract

tell them to take out the payback of recruiter fee if you leave befofre 2 years. and moving expenses. What the f? you want that contract to be as advantageious to you as possible. thats just putting handcuffs on you. If they want you they will take it out. if not. Tell them you are walking. there are plenty of pain jobs out there. I got called for one today.. sweet deal.. Too bad i dont do pain.

Things happen.. you mean if your wife wants to leave or you get a divorce before 2 years they will make you pay (25k) typical recruiterfee and your 5k moving expenses.. F that. If they showed me that contract I wouldnt even call them back. seriously, haggle with them. please.

You could try this. But I doubt they will budge no matter how good you are. There is always someone else. It all depends on how much you want this job.
