I met a guy who knows a guy who knew a guy who was an active duty rheumatologist. He worked with a guy who was an internist that was brought in on a civilian contract. The internist made more than he did.

He did the math. When his service obligation was up he went to work in the civilian sector. He later got a call from a recruiter to re-up for another 4 or 7 (Reserve) year term (can't remember.) He said "no." 6 months after the call, he found himself working along side his fellow service members as a civilian physician on a civilian contract.

Point of story: I do not recommend a military contract as a physician....get paid for what you know or go work for free...

EDIT: Gastrapthy and I have settled out of court under the conditions that the amount disclosed would not be released to the public and I recant my previous statement.

Many General Internists make more than Rheumatologists and Endocrinologists. People who want an exclusively subspecialty practice often take a small pay cut to do that. As for your pay comparison, I know a Rheumatologist who got out at the end of his obligation and was making slightly less than he made as an AD physician working in a relatively high paying region.

You base your recommendation on knowing a guy who knows a guy, etc? Weak.

Yeah, once I saw a black bird flying above the sea; since then, I've assumed all birds where black birds.

Alright, maybe I was a little harsh but there is so much nonsense on this website that I get a tad frustrated. You made a blanket statement about whether or not to choose military medicine because you know someone who got out after his service obligation and got paid more as a civilian. You also backed up that statement with the false assumption that subspecialists have higher salaries. Just didn't see how your post added much to the conversation.

ahhhhh! I'm losing tactical patience for post time frames.

I think my jackass tendancies come from dealing with the 82nd Airborne Division.
