Hey guys,

Long time lurker and new poster. I have a question regarding an EC that I participate in. Throughout my entire life I have been raised around outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, shooting, archery, backpacking), to a point where it has really defined my interests. One thing that I have been doing for a long time is recreational shooting and recycling/reloading brass. Reloading brass is very technical/mechanical and requires a lot of thought. I'm considering not reporting it however (at least the shooting/brass reloading part) due to the sensitivity of current events. Any thoughts?

I doubt anyone will care. Aside from extreme liberals (I'm a liberal btw) no one thinks people who shoot targets for fun is a psychopath. It's also worth pointing out that unlike most of academia, med school faculty tend to actually be conservative rather than liberal.

Honestly, it's kind of a boring hobby to add anyway, as far as medical school applications go.

Hunting, fishing, shooting, archery, backpacking, etc are interesting hobbies/sports, focus on those. Brass loading will seem as interesting to an adcom member as stamp collecting or model trains.

I wouldn't sweat it either way. At most someone will not have any idea what you are talking about and it will start an interesting conversation.

Survivor DO

Woah you're a stamp collector too! Were you at the last convention in San Fran!?!?!?

Not controversial. List it if you want.

My faculty advisor wanted to take my group skeet shooting this fall

I doubt any adcoms would frown on it though they might just shrug and move on. You never know if it'll start a conversation with an interviewer. As long as you don't go on about how you're buying pallets of ammo to survive the UN occupation with their pesky black helicopters you should be fine.

I thought you were gonna tell us you grow marijuana as a hobby.

Now that is a controversial EC.

Brother, I don't see what's controversial about exercising your 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The controversial part of the issue is the unremitting assault on our Constitutional rights.

Is "protesting in a public space on your college campus" a controversial activity too? Hell no.

Although I'm curious how you reload at college. That has to be against school policy.

Haha not at school. At home which is close to my university.

If you want the opinion of someone who supports background checks for guns and honestly, would rather not have anyone besides law enforcement owning assault weapons, I wouldn't blink twice at your hobbies. First of all, you hunt. I don't know if you eat what you hunt, but regardless, I consider hunting to be a perfectly respectable recreational activity. Also, I'd like to think that med school admissions people wouldn't be so biased as to judge anyone based on political leanings, perceived or stated, in the first place.

You might want to explain what brass reloading is though... I had to look that one up! I think your activities make you sound interesting though. I'm fairly liberal and if I met you in med school, I'd want to ask you all about your hobbies, since they're totally different from what I do.
