will researching on sumthin as controversial as human embryonic stem cells have any negative effect on my chances of admission to med school? im just afraid of getting a one-on-one interview, with the interviewer being anti-stem-cell-research...thoughts? personal experiences?

I wouldn't apply to Loma Linda or NYMC with that on your application..... But then again, I don't feel like spending my hours in a lab piddling with cell cultures and Western blots either......

Well, it'll sure as hell make you stand out. Most doctors I know are for stem cell research anyway. Go ahead, leave it on.

I would think that if you were going to spend the time doing the research...

that would indicate that you have some sort of interest in the results of the research...

and in turn you might actually value the research...

and therefore would not want to attend a school that was an advocate AGAINST the type of research...

But hey, that's just me.

most schools arent openly for/against stem cell research. my question was concerning the interviewers and the possibility of them being anti-stem cell research. but i guess someone already mentioned most docs are pro-stem cell research...

I am familiar with Loma Linda, and I believe that they would like to see someone with research and especially in Stem Cell research. Just because they are a Christian school doesn't mean they don't believe in science. I am sure in an interview they will ask you about it. However, if you show a passion for it, they will like your drive and ability to benefit science.

Just be open minded if it comes up - pissing off your interviewer is never a good idea, but if you can have a mature, coherent conversation with plenty of compromise and "hmmm you have a good point there" while making clear points of your own comes off as impressive (at least to me).

Be interesting without being argumentative.

Please don't go posting about things that you have absolutely know knowledge of. I attend NYMC and several of my professors are doing work in stem cell research. Just because they receive funding from the catholic church does not make them a "religious" school. We have just as many Jewish, Hindu, muslim, atheist and non catholic students then we have catholics (if not more) and religion is in NO WAY incorporated into the curriculum. Loma Linda, on the other hand, is very christian and I don't know their stance. However, I take great offense to you posting false information about a school. NYMC is very pro-science, and religion is not an issue.

Any reasonable interviewer wouldn't have a problem with human ESC research. The reality is, that if you're doing the research, you're probably at a government funded institution, and as such, you're following the law. It's hard to argue with that. I can see where stem cells might come up in an ethical question (much like abortion or assisted suicide) but that would be more of an abstract idea, not based on your research.

Maybe they should do research on why you apparently have a faulty copy of the sarcasm detection gene?

Research experience is great. Definitely leave it on the app and be ready to explain the entire experience.

It's not like you spent the summer performing abortions

how dare you, what do you think i'm doing right now?

OP, the vast majority of academic docs support stem cell research, so don't worry about getting an anti-ESC interviewer
