Did you, or anyone you know, do anything special the year or summer before entering dental school? I recently decided to take a year off and am looking into teaching programs, like Teach for America, and also English-teaching programs abroad. Let me know of any experiences or ideas.

I have taken a ton of AWESOME trips this past year, with a couple more sweet ones to go. I figure I won't get to travel that much during dental school, so I'm getting all my sightseeing in while I can!

Be a bum, that's pretty much what I've been doing for over a year now. Yes many people suggested me to go travel. I would travel if I can have my friends to go with me. Not the Han-SOLO type when it comes to traveling.

Thanks!

I'd love to!

I lived in Eastern France/ Western Switzerland from July '07 until May '09, and that was awesome. I especially liked Switzerland, in my opinion it's FAR more beautiful. The people are nicer, too, and there's a lot more diversity. France is still pretty awesome (especially Strasbourg around Christmas time) but I like Switzerland more.

We took a family vacation to Singapore/Thailand/Malaysia for two weeks in May. That was a once in a lifetime experience. We rode elephants, pet tigers, visited ancient Buddhist temples and had an overall amazing cultural experience.

I got married in July and my wife and I took our honeymoon to St Lucia in the Caribbean. Beautiful island, all the locals were awesome and friendly as could be. We did zip-lining, visited a dormant volcano, went fishing, etc, and had a blast.

In August we went to Alaska for a week to do some salmon/halibut fishing. I have been several times before, but it was a first for my wife. I absolutely love it, fishing 10-12 hours a day, and would STRONGLY recommend it for any fisherman out there. We usually feed our neighborhood/church with the fillet's we bring home (over 300 lbs this year).

We did some small weekend camping trips and 3 trips to So Cal to see my parents, and those are always fun (just not quite as intense as everything else).

Right now we're figuring out plans for this summer, which will probably include a trip to Vegas, hiking Mt. Whitney in CA, a Mexican cruise, and some other family vacation my parents are planning.

I'm really sorry if this sounds like I'm boasting or something... it wasn't intended. We usually don't do this much, but this last year has been awesome as far as traveling goes.

What were you doing while you lived in Europe? What kind of work were you involved in?

Where does everyone get the $$$$$ to do this????

I plan to go to the outer banks in north carolina to kitesurf for a month or two.

If i get lucky I got a hook up for a super cheap apartment 🙂

Yeah I was gonna say, this all sounds AMAZING, but there is NO way I could ever afford all that!

wow amazing that you guys can afford to travel so much considering most of us will be in debt in the ~200-300k range..

I was serving a mission for my church. It was an awesome experience, learning the language and culture. But it wasn't necessarily traveling, per se. I did a lot of sightseeing for sure, but not as much as I would have liked.

Never say never! We're going into dentistry! I'm sure if we plan right, we'll all have the time and money to do crazy stuff.

Can you afford to pay 15 bucks a month?

If yes, then you can travel across Azeroth for the adventure of your life time. 🙂

At least that's what I plan on doing after i quit my job.

Ive been kayak fishing up and down southern cali, caught a thresher shark and got towed around for half an hour. I took his pictures while hanging off the side of my kayak before releasing him.

But then I had a freak accident right before a dental interview and completely ruptured my achilles tendon. Had to show up to the interview on crutches, and then come home to get surgery. I am supposed to go to costa rica this summer, but it all depends on how long it takes to recover.

This is a picture of the the back of my leg during surgery, you can see the severed tendon. Be careful out there!

oh man, what the hxll did you do!!! That doesn't look fun at all.

I'm supposed to (will be) spending the summer in the UK & Ireland visiting family. May also do a bit of travel to France & Northern Italy & possibly Prague or somewhere in July for my birthday depending on where my Irish friend & I decide. 🙄

I taught English abroad for 6 months and I loved the experience!
If you are interested in Asian countries like Japan or Korea, they have many different programs (I went to Korea). I think people in Asian countries are really eager to learn English so there's always job opening for native speakers.
Some places even offer to pay for your flights...

Good luck, and do whatever you can/you want to before you start your career!

Get a job in Alaska. They always need tour guides in the summer and it would be a great way to meet people from all over the world. It's good money too.

In my year off I traveled around the U.S. to see relatives, I figure I won't get to take many vacations in dental school and even if they come into town i'll have limited time to see them,, Dallas was a good time I usually stay in the northeast but going down there is like a different country in a way.. Loved it tho
