You couldn't PAY ME to go to school in NYC. Visit it....take it for what it's got to offer, but live there for 4 years? Ich denke nein.

Good to see we have the same thought process.lol I'm thinking a lot of these fantastic places to do stuff are freakishly expensive and from what I hear one doesn't really have that much money to blow anyway.... So the coolest place for me will be the one with cheap booze and warmer weather while still being in the US...So any college town in the south I guess.

New York is so dangerous right now (let’s not even discuss how expensive New York is to live). Just recently there was a report that came out that the subway was planed to be attacked by terrorist again.

I thought it was just a report about how pre 9/11 there were intentions tto do a gas attack on certain strategic areas. They were something like 45 days from the planned time for doing it. I mean it isn't the danger that scares me. I generally fear getting hit by an old person in their Buick while driving before I worry about terrorist attacks. I just don't care for the general lack of green, the ridiculous prices, traffic, and the hideous accents that accompany a large chunk of the population raised there. Sure it is great that you have access to all sorts of neat stuff. I mean I like the ability to see all the cultural events and stuff but it always seems to be just the ability to me. I am in Berlin now which is awash in cultural stuff, concerts, clubs and I never seem to really go to it. What do I do instead? The same stuff I do at home. Go to movies, hangout at a bar with friends, etc. I have gone to plenty of broadway plays, the met all of 4 times or so, moma 4+ times, guggenheim twice, clubs a few times, all of the sites but I fail to see the huge cost of it everytime I go there as being worth it to stay longer and have constant access. I like being able to take a boat out fishing for the day, riding my bike in a park, and just the overall pace of other places just as much. Everyone is different though and it is somewhat important to at least EXPERIENCE a major city enviroment for more than a weekend trip.

Newark is pretty sweet......lol Half of my family is from around that area...gotta love the boarded up buildings and general lack of care of their old town.....London would be swee to live in if it weren't ridiculous price wise. I was there for a weekend and casually dropped 300 dollars like it was nothing. If we were opening up europe though there are a TON of places..I think we should probably keep it in the US/Canada 😉

Newark is the best place for medical school!!!

GO NJMS!!!

This may be the first time I've ever heard the words "Newark is the best."

From someone who has been to perhaps 35 the 50 states: And from a single persons point of view.. Overall, unless your loaded and dont mind the thought of another terrorist attack looming over you Id r/o New York even with the numerous resources, the electricity and the special cases {for example malaria could make its way to a hospital in Long island, not to mention the diversity of New York City} Basically New York had lost some of its swagger even pre 911, but tourist still come in droves. Ironically snow doesnt really affect New York City that much, just gives it more electricity.
But to get to the point. Anywhere in California should be great. Also with at least 5 or 6 med schools real close to each other Philadelphia is a great choice plus it has easy acess to major cities. Last but definitely not least Charlottesville, Virgina which I visited this year because of all the hype.
I must say the action is near U.of Virginia built by Thomas Jefferson: This is just a nice quaint academic-type town, no doubt about it!!

i agree. I've always want to go to school/live in Boston, seems like a cool place, but I decided to stay in Texas because it was cheaper *sigh*

best thread ever! keep posting med students, and help us premeds out!

Definitely Houston--It's a cesspool of disease. MRSA, TB, and HIV abound. Also, there's the TMC, the biggest medical center in the world!!!

That said, I can understand the votes for almost every city EXCEPT Charlottesville. God, I hated it there. I lived there for a few months and it seemed like an eternity. Expensive, stuck-up, and totally boring. I can't imagine that there are any interesting cases there.

I would have to say Seattle, Portland, San Fransisco, LA, San Diego...actually, just anywhere on the west coast. And Denver 👍

What?! Nobody's mentioned St. Louis yet? So many friendly people and so much free stuff to do ... cheap housing ... decent traffic ... and you can fly in and out on Southwest.

NOLA = new orleans, LA

St. Louis isn't horrible..but it isn't by any means by ideal city. At least they have the pretty new stadium for the cards though...and the budweiser factory if you like low level american beer 😉

I think if there were US medical schools in the Caribbean, then that would be neat. San Fran would have my heart as well.

There are, they are in Puerto Rico.

what are some of the drawbacks to going to med school in a big city (like chicago, ny, or la). i dont see how being in a suburb or rural area would be better unless you had a wife and kids, which i dont.

Boston or NYC. Probably Boston.

I'm going to Medical School in Vegas!

UNR makes you do some of your rotations in Las Vegas such as surgery. Unfortunately UNLV doesn't have a med school.

Depends on the city, but in general there's more traffic, less parking, more crime, more smog, and a higher living expense. Some people also dislike the fast-paced environment. In addition, some students say they prefer a small town because there is less to do and, therefore, less distractions. But, it's all up to the individual. I personally love urban life and would go crazy if I lived in a small town. Allthough there are a few cons to living in a city, I believe the pros are definitely worth it.
