Has anyone interviewed at Cornell (NY Presb)? What did you think of their program? Also, I heard the have subsidised housing. How are the apartments? What is the caliber of the students they invite for interview?

Cornell is a very good program. Check out where they match their grads to fellowships- incredible. If you're not AOA, you have little chance of interviewing there let alone matching there. They have very good case volume and very little scut. Very wealthy hospital. The 80 hour rule was never an issue for them. You will leave there a confident, well trained general surgeon ready to match to ANY fellowship you want. The housing is awesome. I interviewed there, ranked them high but did not match. Good luck.

who care about AOA or not....

Bunch of nobility oriented training programs....

General Surgery is general surgery.....what is the big deal.

Is there such a difference on how you repair a hernia either in harvard or some other unknown place I wonder....Recurrence pretty much same...

So what is such a big deal....

It is all about politics......

In my experience, patients who question your training are usually the worse to work with.... Like some rich lady who did not know where liver was talking about her internist being harvard trained and all.. So I was like can you spell your own name lady......

My old chief used to go around during rounds....okay Mr John do you want this operation since the intern had already explained about the procedure...Patient said no.....then my chief said " okay take him off the list, le'ts go." I might said he had some attitude but he was actually one of the best young surgeons i have ever seen among all others....And, he was graduated from some unknown program in NY. I liked his non BS type way of doing things....

So many out there talk about ivy league names and all that....Who really cares. I wonder....

cornell is probably the best program in nyc in terms of training and living arrangements... but it is far from being in the top tier of academics with jhu, mgh, washu, umich, etc. i wanted to love cornell, and i did when i interviewed, but you have to look beyond the $700 a month upper east side subsidized housing if you want to be in a top tier program. they simply have too many deficiencies... 1.) they have been sans chairman for too long 2.) they have too many fellows in CT/Thoracic/Surg Onc/Lap, and the sections they don't have fellows (transplant and peds) are the sections they do not have any cases 3.) they have too many VIP patients which translates into look but don't touch in the operating room....don't get me wrong i think you can become a great surgeon at any program, it is really up to what you make of it (just like med school), and getting a fellowship is not as hard as it is made out to be (except maybe for peds)...so that is not a great indicator. if you really want to be in NYC then you should go for it, and if you are not AOA then do a subi. but look around at other places to get a sense of what you want....and if what you want is an academic program, then you might just have to leave the tri-state area.
