there were about 35 of us at the first revisit weekend, so a better assumption would be they took about 40 or 50 in December.

There was already a revisit weekend?!?! WHAT!

i think it was for the tiny batch of people that was accepted back in december through email.

How overqualified do you have to be to get in as a part of the December batch?

Oh Cornell... Tell you what. The truth is... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.

40 does not seem like a tiny batch. The class consists of about 110.

That'sa not really all that tiny....

Assuming 40 accepted: 101-40= 61 spots left

765 interviewed....ouch.

All this time I was under the impression that only about 10 people or so got in in December. Almost half the spots are filled up now AND I have below average stats for Cornell. This does not look good.

I wish I had cured some disease.

Because of matriculation rates, there are probably about 150 spots remaining.

61*2 ~ 120
.5 *40 ~ 20

Total ~ 150 estimated remain

yea, but you have to consider that these applicants are the same ones that qualify for other top schools. i don't think all or even a majority are going to say yes back to cornell if they have columbia, harvard, LA or SF in their other hand. cornell must have taken this into account and will be accepting more than just the 101 matriculants. 40 compared to 200+, is kinda small right?

Assuming that 200 people (out of 765) get a golden ticket, 20% of the spots leaves 40% of the spots open to my gender (assuming a 50/50 split of wo/men). Couple this with other depreciating factors (i.e. numbers, % of residents versus non-residents taken), and one's chances seem to get whittled down pretty quickly.

Somebody please dull my knife before I take to cutting myself....😉

Ok guys, according to US News, the numbers for last year (? or the year before, not sure which) are: 765 interviewed, 222 accepted. Sooo figure they accept 200 and then pull 22 off the waitlist? Not really sure... But it still means that probably ~150 more spots will go out soon. Also, if you look at mdapps, it *seems* that a lot of the December admits were minorities or MD/PhD. Of course, there are very few December admits on mdapps, so this could be totally skewed... Anyway, good luck to everyone waiting!

I believe it was a revisit for underrepresented minorities (see this thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=264004). I got in with the December batch but didn't receive any information about that revisit. I'm planning to go to the 5/5-6 one.

Are those of you who went to the first revisit coming to the second one as well? I'm looking forward to meeting my potential future classmates, and it'd be a shame if a lot of people didn't come because they'd already been!

(p.s. good luck to all of you who are waiting [in agony, it seems!] to hear)

Does this mean that they've accepted all their minority students already and if you are a minority student you can pretty much count on Rejection/Waitlist?

Dude, did you just figure this out. I realized this in January so I have been preparing for the letter since then.

I think they will still accept some more miniorities, I think..ok.. I hope. Good luck :luck:

Yea, I know.
I've been thinking this for a while.
Just wan't sure.
It really hit me when I met a student at NYU revisit and he said he was going to revisit weekend at Cornell (and I was like WHAT? REVISIT WEEKEND?)
So yea, I good luck to everyone

I mean, they must have interviewed minorities since December, so, they can't be done accepting either.

I say, the show's not over till the fat lady sings.

Sing, Fat Lady, Sing!!!!

I doubt it. There are definitely more than 20 OQURMs who interviewed at Cornell. I'd guesstimate the number to be much nearer to 100. That probably won't make anyone feel better. We're all still going to continue freaking out regardless of our ethnicity 🙂

30-40 accepted minorities already? who knows how many non-URM they have accepted. What happened to the 10-15 number they were talking about - and the "early March notification"?

Being kept in the dark is awful.

I was at Cornell for the minority revisit weekend last week. There were 34 candidates there. There were probably a few that didn't make it. I think Cornell admitted about 40 candidates total in December.

Historically less than half go to Cornell. Last year there were 18 URM's in the 2009 class. Cornell aggressively recruits URM candidates and that's why they set aside an entire weekend, and admissions period, for them.

I do not know if they only admit URM's in December. I recall reading that they offer over 200 spots total each year.

It was sounding like everyone that went had already been accepted, but what youre saying is that they included candidates and acceptees - which makes it a different story.

Anyone know if all hispanics fall under the URM category?

Any URM's interview, but not get invited to revist weekend?

No, he meant that not everyone that was accepted was able to make it to the URM revisit.

Right, I'm sure there were a few accepted candidates who did not make it to the revisit weekend.

i think someone from SDN made that number up...i just remember cornell saying general things like "a few acceptances," no numbers.

Well, again from USNews: 765 interviewed, 222 accepted, 101 enrolled. Minorities: 365 interviewed, 124 accepted, 39 enrolled. So more than half of the accepted students are minorities. But this again brings into question whether a "minority" on US News is an URM, or just a "minority"??

Just a minority. I'd guess that many of those are Asian.

I dunno what to say. Those numbers could be right. I don't know.

sorry to create such a mess and then not be around to answer questions....the 35-40 number was not made up, thats how many people were physically present this last weekend.

all present were minorities. a couple md/phd, mostly md. you could say that they were "underrepresented minorities" in that there were no asians in attendance, but realize that the term "underrepresented minority" has just gotten A LOT vaguer with the new definition by the AAMC, which came into place this year, so there was an interesting blend of people.

i really don't have a sense of how many of those 40 intend on going to Cornell, but I can say that the vast majority had other great options and/or were waiting to hear from other top schools. That said, most people seemed very excited about Cornell.

i was told by a student that those that had been admitted in December (aside from MD/PHDs) were canditates classified as minorities by Cornell that interviewed early enough that a decision could be made by the end of December.

Cornell get off your ass and make a decision already.

One would hope they decide to notify us before Match Day 2010 rolls around....

So what is the consensus? Is Cornell sending out email rejections/acceptances mid-March or end of March? which is it? And has anyone heard anything yet?

they're choosing the remainder of the class this week...who knows when they will actually let you know! it'll likely be by email though.

A fourth year Cornell student told me today that "PBL is worthless."

urghhhhhhhh I'm so frustrated and so confused as to whether or not I even want to go here! Especially with all the remarks about PBL. But, I do hear the kids are happy....
😕 😕 😕

I can't figure it out either. Cornell was my first choice for a couple of years! But i'm in at P&S too and now I think Columbia's better. Guess I'll see you at P&S revisit....

Cornell location is so much better than Columbia's location in terms of social life...

I share those feelings....for sure....

Social life better at Cornell? I don't know about that. Every hear of Club P&S? They have WAY more extracurriculur stuff going on at P&S and the class is significantly bigger. And in terms of location, don't forget two things: 1. that P&S has it's own subway stop and it's ONE stop to 59th street/Columbus Circle on the A train and 2. Cornell is on York Ave and is about 5 blocks from a Subway stop at Lexington Ave. P&S students party a lot and have a ton of fun. They also have the entire Columbia University as their playground. Weill Cornell is pretty isolated as a College and in terms of public transport (unless you love the excrutiatingly slow bus).

....and if you're interested in helping an indigent/underserved community and working in a clinic, then P&S clearly is a superior location. The views at P&S are much better too.

You don't even have to be interested in helping the indigent/underserverd, all you have to interested in is not being around the Upper East side - where everyone seems to have a poodle, furcoat and facelift. Ugh.
P&S is a way better choice.

Godamnit why do civil Cornell or Columbia threads always have to degrade into this. Stop!!! 😡

Why? Because we have to decide which one to spend $200,000 and 4 years of our lives on. That's why. Cornell is unbelievably sweet place to study medicine also but, damnit, it's a had decision.

Seriously- this is a decision that some of us have to think about... med school is a lot of time and money... people have different feelings about location etc. in NYC and there is a major difference between Cornell and Columbia. I might be choosing between these 2 schools! 🙁

luckily columbia gave me the boot, so i don't have to decide! i got a weird vibe when i was there anyway...

columbia's students struck me as more type A than cornell's, though i don't mean that in a bad way...it's just not the best environment for me. they all seem to be having a good time though!

good luck deciding y'all! :luck:

My poodle is offended!

Who cares about HMS? I didn't apply there because I have no interest in that particular medical school. You've just been accepted and you're already being arrogant and obnoxious and imposing your ugly ass dog on us. Listen, go to harvard, spend four years thinking you're the greatest medical student in the world and please, leave the rest of us alone. Thanks.

GET A LIFE. GO BACK TO THE HARVARD THREAD. I RANKED COLUMBIA FAR ABOVE HARVARD FOR MANY REASONS.

geez, touchy much? 😛

Yeah, I don't like Harvard people, undergrad, grad, med, business....all the same. Invariably they have major attitude problems.

How obnoxious is it, within one day of getting into Haaahvaaahd (whatever), to post an enourmous picture of your dog on a thread where the pros and cons of Columbia and Cornell are being discussed. Pisses me off. Go to Boston and stay there.
