Coronavirus: Anyone worried about flying?

Personally, I might be a bit extreme but I'm not stepping foot onto a plane until the coronavirus gets contained/managed. I don't like taking unnecessary risks, no matter how big or small, towards my health.

Then again, I've got 75k in loans left so I can't really afford to be sick...

So, is the flu chopped liver now?

I wouldn't be worried about it. While the # of airports screening for it has increased, cases remain relatively low in the US and other parts of the world. Still, it doesn't hurt to practice good hand washing hygiene, avoid touching your face, and have a bit of common sense. Wear a mask if you feel its necessary.

If you assume room temperature, you don't need to worry about loans.

I'm taking a flight this weekend. Should I be worried?
Apparently, like... 100 people died? lol 60,000 died of influenza, 40,000 died from auto accidents and 75,000 died from gunshots last year... you probably have a higher chance of dying from getting shot in your car while driving at the same time being infected with the flu than this virus... also, it's china. China is gon china. Who cares. Just carry on.

Even then, it’s mostly contained to one city in China.

If the Chinese govt says 100 people died, I just multiply by 1000 cuz those shady fckers are probably lying again. China gon China indeed.

Nah, someone ****ed up. His pilot should not have received clearance to fly that day, If police helicopters are grounded, then his pilot shouldn't have received clearance. Secondly, they need to outfit helicopters with the ground/terrain warning systems.

He had 4mi visibility at SNA and it dropped to 2.5mi just south of BUR, VFR is 3mi so flying in 2.5mi wasn’t unheard of. It just got progressively worse when he got past the Valley, unfortunately. Part of me thinks he tried to turn around and ran out of altitude.

LAPD is overly cautious, private flights will routinely still go even if they’re grounded.

Could be. I don't get why the descent rate was so fast though and apparently he only needed 30 feet to clear that mountain. Why not just fly higher at that point instead of turning around? Maybe climb to 5k?

Okay so my flight trip last month was fine, didn't get the virus. Now I have another trip in May and there are many more cases. Would you guys fly in May or cancel or too early to tell?

The chances your flight of a few hundred people has someone that is infected and infects you is so slim.

Probably a way higher chance of getting it at work.

Also who cares, the death rate is way lower then reported. I'd be more concerned about getting the flu on the plane.

Agreed. You are probably far more likely to get it at a retail pharmacy where people are far more likely to be sick.

Planes are also probably mostly empty now so that might decrease your chance of getting infected.

I didn't mention that I'm going to LAX, where two health screeners were infected. We have a 2 year old traveling with us. Just because it has a low death rate, doesn't mean we want to deal with being sick for weeks, infecting others, being quarantined, being away from family and work etc.

Is your 2 year old never leaving the house?

Schools are shutting down all over the place, I'm glad ours haven't. We had one nearby that's out for 2 weeks since a student tested positive. While I don't want mine to get it, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

I'm not worried about them though just like I'm not worried if they get the flu.

All I'm saying is you can protect your child but it's going to be random bad luck he/she touches the wrong thing then like all kids puts their hand in their mouth.

Just curious, when's the last time you cleaned your phone? While most people will say an hour, I've read it can survive possibly up to a day on a surface.

I wipe down my phone like once a week. I guess I should do it everyday.

Harvard is kicking everyone off campus for the spring semester and doing everything online, crazy. Wth are the international and out of state students going to do for housing?

I was just at the gym..and they are no kidding wiping down everything in sight....which is good....After my shower..I bathed my tongue in 40 % ethanol...with flavoring.. those rascally airlines are running the air conditioning "frugally" to save gas.....at least open the sliding windows...

Took a flight last weekend and the plane was half empty. Whole row to myself and I haven't died yet, even if my city is basically one step away from quarantine and the president just banned travel to Europe.

I'm not going anywhere. People are generally disgusting and my company is now prohibiting work travel and meetings. This is such a great example of the antivaxxer mentality on display. You are not exceptional. Your trip isn't exceptional, your skin is not made of viricidal copper, your immune system is not spectacular. The more we bog down the system with this, the less we have for all of the other illnesses that are not taking a haitus to let COVID-19 have the spotlight. Rationing is what should concern us all.

Some people don't have the choice to stay home. Those who can, should.

This should be the post of the week

You're not out of the woods yet. Incubation period median is 5.1 days.

Yes yes. Stay home and dont leave. Thanks for making my vacation super cheap. Also, this type of panic is actually making me money on stock lol. Please continue.

I get to spend a month as a shut in in Falling Waters WV. If they wanted to encourage staying on site by making the town suck, they kind of overdid it. Falling Waters does everything short of putting up a sundown town sign to make the place unfriendly to strangers. I'm more afraid of getting lead poisoning from some hillbilly methhead or cop than COVID.

Please lick every bill as you are counting them and every tray table in your row. It's good for your microbiome.
I knew it. Trump did teach you!! Trump University? Did donald give you them one of those "huge" lectures? or tell you that there are huge number of bacteria living in your gut that exceeds the number of your own cells and you're pretty much a bug if you really think about it? haha

I mean it is pretty damn hard to transmit AIDS but it still managed to become a pandemic. I don't think containment is just about the disease itself, it is the attitude of the mass. If you even have a portion of the population who says, I am healthy and won't have symptoms so why do I care, not my problem if I give it to others, or this is my chance to see the world burn, you are essentially SOL.

Like I would like to wear masks if they are available. I know they do not protect me but can lessen the chance of me spreading the disease to others if I am infected. I would like to think I'm doing the patients that I counsel face-to-face a favor but I already know some assh*les are going to harass me for doing so.

HungerGames, are you just saying all of this because you think the virus won't harm that many people? Because I have to assume that you are not crazy enough to want everyone to not worry about getting infected.

Respectable. Those who are smart enough will appreciate it, dont mind the others. I have been facing some tension from people around me simply because I am asian. And it gets really awkward when someone coughs because everyone looks my way to see if it was me.

Yes. I need to go see my family in a month as well.
I do not want to make my parents or young nephews sick by any chance so I am reconsidering.
