So I was looking into away rotations, and one school wanted $400 for 2 weeks! I always thought that they were 'free' among LCME schools, since we all pay tuition and do away rotations at each other's schools. What a wakeup call.

Other than the cost of housing, is it customary to have to pay for rotations? What's the standard cost? Which schools are free and which aren't?

Any tips appreciated.

You shouldn't have to pay to rotate through a hospital. Just look elsewhere. Also, most places provide housing for rotating students.

I had to pay $100 at my away to rotate there; I think it was their own personal "application fee" in addition to VSAS's.

None of the places I investigated provided housing for students. I stayed in an extended stay hotel. I looked at Craig's list and everything was far from the hospital and was college kids who wanted to share a room.

I also rented a car for a month.

for those who have done aways, typically how much do you spend on one rotation for all expenses...

i'm starting to realize that 4th year is going to require quite a bit of loanage with all the costs of step 2, interviews, aways etc etc

I did 2 aways. 1 at home, had to rent a car $500.

My away where I stayed in a hotel (I had friends mad at me for not staying with them, anyway), ignore that cost. Car $700.

Food, normal cost for where I normally live.

If I get my 3rd away set up, it'll be in England, and relatively expensive, but I won't need to rent a car.

My aways were either free (1) or $25 (2). For one I rented a room from a resident for the month - $450 (which was a very fair price esp considering I had total house privledges). The other two were done where I could stay with family/friends.

away rotations can be very costly, as i'm learning...i'll be doing three away rotations, and am almost about to finish my first.

my expenses won't be that much because, for at least for two of my rotations, i am living with people that i know. this cuts down on a very large part of the associated costs, in terms of housing and eating out.

additionally, i've chosen cities where mass public transportation is the easiest, most convenient, and cheapest way to travel in the respective city. i already have a car (in my home state), and i see no point in paying money to rent a car. finally, all of my away rotations are close to one another, in terms of state-to-state location.

i think the financial aspect of away rotations can be do-able, if you plan appropriately and think carefully as to how you can cut corners, financially.
