I'm a dual us-Cdn citizen training right now north of the border. If I decide to get a US license, how much would it cost me to get malpractice insurance so I may moonlight during my second year of residency and beyond? I figure I might be able to work shifts at the VA or cover for people via locums without board certification but the $$ is way more than we make up here anyway.

Any ideas what malpractice insurance in FP would cost me for this purpose?

Thanks! 🙂

Every place I've moonlighted has covered the malpractice insurance for me (ie, no cost to me).

I'm curious...can you get a US license without being in a US training program or practicing medicine here?

That's a good question..As far as I know, because our schools are LCME accredited, we're not seen as any different than US schools provided we have the immigration rights to work in the USA. I know that we can get a US license easily after finishing residency up here. Assuming all that works out, the tricky part is that my residency program would be north of the border and the malpractice coverage is only valid in the province I am training in (and we're not allowed to moonlight here).

Is it possible to purchase US malpractice coverage solely for the purpose of moonlighting while in residency? (I wonder who do residency programs purchase the insurance for their residents from??)

I realize that you probably attended an LCME accredited program; I was more interested in whether or not as a resident you could get a license in another state where one is not training or planning to move to for training/job. Guess it doesn't come up very often.

You can purchase independent malpractice insurance, but again, I was covered (and not by my residency program but rather by the hospital I was working for) and I'm not sure you need it. If so, I would imagine it to be pretty expensive. Unfortunately, I never paid much attention to the company the hospitals used to cover me.

Agree with Kimberli. There is almost no way you can work enough moonlighting to pay malpractice (including the tail you would need at the end of residency) and have it be worthwhile, so make sure that whatever position you are able to land pays your liability. I'm sure the VA would be such a situation.

Once you meet the requirements for licensing you should be able to get a license in any state you want. For example, I have a license to practice in New York. I am considering going back to Ohio after graduation in June 2006. I am going to begin the application process this summer but I may or may not actually practice there. If you wanted to, you could get license in every state of the union as long as you met the individual state requirements.
