Cost of the application cycle

Most dental schools don't do $5,000 deposits. I think the majority are $1,000. The vast majority, if not all, are nonrefundable though. So it's still a huge chunk of money.
At least it usually goes towards tuition.

Having applied to medical schools, it's true that deposits are usually very little and refundable.

But I think that might have to do with simply the sheer number of med schools there are compared to dental schools.

If you just go into the Official Acceptance, Interview thread, there are already a butt load of people complaining about how long it's taking to wait on the waitlist. Imagine how much worse it'd be if I could put down a deposit at all 5 schools I got into, and just hold on to the seats until April. Fortunately, I got into my #1 in Dec. So no deposit loss for me.
