I've been trying to find doctors to shadow for a while and I've gotten many no's. I'm hoping to mail in a cover letter & resume to my pediatrician back home since she always liked my family. Other than that, I have no family connections for physicians..
Could you give me some tips on what to write? Here's what I have. (The format didn't exactly transfer. I used the same header as my resume with my name in the middle and my school & current address on either side.) Thanks!

Dear Dr. XXXXX,

My name is XXXXXX XXXXXX and I (as well as my older siblings) have been your patient at XXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXX since birth. I am freshman biology major on a pre-medical track at XXXXX University in XXXXXX, Florida, but I still reside in XXXXX, Ohio. I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing in hopes that you will allow me to shadow you this summer to gain clinical experience and insight into the daily life of a practicing pediatrician.

At XXXXXX University, my coursework has included Introductory Biology 141 and 142. These courses were challenging and ignited my love of science and biology. I was introduced to the basic principles of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular genetics, and animal and plant physiology. I aspire to attend medical school after finishing my undergraduate degree, and I am currently considering different fields of medicine. I am specifically interested in pharmacogenomics and individualized medicine. I believe that my grasp of science and my curiosity will allow me to greatly benefit from observing your work in a clinical setting.

During my junior year of high school, I had the privilege to work at XXXXXX XXXXXX, an optometrist’s office in XXXXX. Through my work as a file clerk, I learned to perform clerical duties as efficiently as possible to help the office run smoothly. I handled mail and faxing for the optometrists, directed patients to our manager, and adhered to HIPAA policies. If given this opportunity, I am confident I could practice professionalism and strict confidentiality.

I have attached my resume and reference list for review, and I hope you will consider allowing me to observe your practice this summer. I would love to discuss the possibility of shadowing your work when I return to Ohio at the end of the semester in May. If you need to contact me, I can be reached at (XXX) XXX-XXXX or at [email protected] anytime. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXXXXXX

Amazing effort, but this is such overkill. Your doctor is going to fall asleep reading this. (S)he really doesn't need a cover letter, resume, and references for shadowing. ESPECIALLY considering (s)he is your primary doctor who has known you forever. Cold calling will work just fine.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I called the office and they actually did suggest I send a resume but I'll call first from now on.

Wow really? If he's writing you a letter sure, but for a freshman to shadow him? Sheesh.

Yeah, I'd keep it short and sweet if I were you. No need to talk about your experience at the optometrist's office or your interest in pharmacogenomics. Doctors are busy people, just cut to the chase.

Yeah, that's overkill. I've gotten doctors to let me shadow after a 15 second phone call. Doctors who say no or ignore you just don't want shadows in general, not because you're not special enough.

If you have to write a letter (or email), then you just say you're a premed student interested in gaining exposure. Keep it a few sentences.

Thanks guys. I haven't heard back yet but I will definitely keep it short next time--and I'll call first.
The pediatrician is a female, as I mentioned in my post. Not sure if y'all didn't read it or if that was too unbelievable.
Just kidding!
