First, I am aware that noone on these forums can diagnose nor treat nor give advice, blah blah blah
But my situation might seem familiar. I need to have 2 screws removed from my leg, set in bone and securing an IM nail inside my tibia. The nail won't be removed, just the screws.
I'm scared ****less of propofol and other general anesthetics, because it causes neurological damage in lab animals. I don't want to be exposed to any of that **** if I can avoid it, as in just a few weeks I start a post-bacc at Rosalind Franklin. Sure, it might not hurt me...I do use a cell phone, after all...but I don't want to take the risk.
So, is it possible to do a procedure like this with locals? I read there are various nerve blocks, and the procedure will only take about 5-10 minutes, according to the surgeon.
At the moment, I want to refuse the surgery unless they can perform it using only locals with perhaps a mild sedative or 2 such as valium.
I'm sure one of the anesthesia residents can chime in here about whether a surgery like this can be performed using a blockade, and how much more difficult it would be versus general anesthetics.
Remember : the screws are set in bone, and will be unscrewed using a cordless drill.
