Countdown to Match 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else feel like no matter what they do to their list they're not happy with it? I don't know how to let it go, I keep staring at it like some solution is going to pop out at me and say "THIS IS HOW YOU SHOULD RANK THE PROGRAMS!" I wish the ROL deadline was here just so I could be done with it and not have a choice anymore...🙁

SAME HERE!!!! Can't. Stop. Staring at it.

It's like your fantasy football team (if you play). You just keep looking at it wanting to make more changes until finally you do at the last minute. More often than not those changes hurt you, but still what's the fun in not doing anything??

Those changes always hurt you but they're impossible to resist. The FF gods punish you for spontaneous decisions like that.

I'm making sure to have my list completely done at least a few days prior so I dont make any rash last minute decisions

I agree on both points. I've set the 18th as my personal deadline.

Love the FF analogy, it's perfect.

but the problem with staring or not, changing or not changing the rank order serves no importance in whether you get matched. It is only your preference of where you want to be. Whether you'll match into your Number 1 position or Number 10 is in programs' hands now.

Anyone else starting to suffer from matchitis? I have combined case of senioritis/matchitis bad--I can barely pull myself together to get through a few hours of clinic. I've even begun browsing apartment listings for my number 1.

Yep. Although I haven't gone as far as looking for housing for my #1...

Anyone have any funny interview stories? I had someone (another applicant) just walk up to me and ask me if I could grow a mustache. Also, another applicant asked someone who had just became a US citizen if they were going to "throw [themselves] a big 'I love America' party". :lame:

I wouldn't exactly say that "looking" for housing--more like I occasionally find myself mindlessly browsing padmapper in that city. Yup, still bad though.

I did that (apartments.com) even before interview invites went out

Love this post. I definitely have dream apartments I look up for my #1. Then come on here and panic if I'll even match. I go from day dreaming to massive stressing. It needs to be march 16 already.

I'm suffering through the same feeling, BAD. Every day on ICU rounds I count the days to March 16 in my head and then think to myself what I was doing that many days ago. Then I tell myself wow that just seemed like yesterday, so this next 30 days should go by just as fast as the last 30. Then I go through my rank list in my head, as if I don't know what it is already. I might even spend a few moments to think about what I like about my top programs. By then it is almost time to move on to patient #2 of 20 and the senioritis drags on. I think weekly weekend road trips might help make this time pass a little faster..

Waiting is the worst 🙁 the thing I don't quite understand is once lists are finalized by Feb 22nd, the computer doesn't need weeks to calculate and run an algorithm. Those matches are just sitting in that computer....

Out of all years why does our match year have to be a leap year?

I thought the same thing but then I realized that If it wasn't a leap year the Match would've actually been on March 17th! Of course either way the number of days would've been the same since it is on the 3rd Friday of March...

Better question would've been why do WE have to wait until Friday when up until this year the match was actually on Thursdays 😡

Yeah you are right. My whining didn't clouded my thinking.

It would have been nice to have Match Day on St. Patrick's Day but this way may be better bc I'll have an excuse to drink Friday and Saturday.

Well we are the guinea pigs for the new SOAP system so that's why ours got pushed back to Friday. I prefer Friday because it makes it easier for family to attend and I don't have to worry about clinical duties the next day.

Is it common for family to attend your school's Match Day celebrations?

In previous years fourth years at my school have had match day and the following Friday off.

For ours, yes. It's a big outdoor celebration with alcohol, BBQ, picnic tables, etc.

I can't speak for other schools but at my school yes it is. We have the ceremony in an auditorium and the reception afterwards.

Nice. I thought most were of the variety that parents weren't typically invited and the auditorium stuff is followed by drinks/going out. Different settings I guess.

My school is also smaller than most. The bigger schools may do things differently

We have beaten, revived and then beaten (and then revived) this horse again so often that it makes Abu Ghraib look like Disneyland.

I am pretty sure that is basically true of the vast majority of posts/topics on SDN.

Our school didn't automatically give the day after Match Day off. Most rotations would let you go (or look the other way if you "called out sick" that day), but there were one or two attendings who were notorious for failing you if you didn't come in the day after the Match. Yes, really. 🙄

What, were those attendings never med students in the match? I bet they fell below their top 5 and are forever bitter about it or something.

All we need is a primary rank order list and the green certified right? I'm freaking out!
