I don't know the first thing about finding an Osteopathic physician to shadow. I found some listings in the phone book and one right next to the pizza place that I sometimes get pizza from (he is FP). I dont know if I should go there in person to ask if I can shadow or if I should call. I have the feeling that the secretary is going to try and blow me off before I can even make contact with the physician. What is the best way to approach and Osteopathic physician about shadowing them? I know that HIPPA laws scare the hell out of many physicians. I also heard something about it being necessary to wear a white coat while shadowing? How can you do this if you are not yet in med school? Or is this total non sense?

My second question is when you go for your interviews (I'll be applying next year) what is the proper attire to wear to an interview. Do you needa suit? Business casual? Or can you go in wearing a baggy Rocawear jeansuit with your pants hanging off of your a$$, plus wearing a skull cap?

Any advice you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated!

To help with your first question I would write a letter to the osteopath including why you are interested in shadowing and send a resume. In addition, I stated in the letter that I would be calling or stopping by sometime the following week. I sent out about five letters like this and only three DO were willing…but all you need it ONE!

Second question: A suit is nice, but a button shirt and slacks/skirt work well too.

1. Contact your state osteopathic association or local osteopathic medical school for a list of physicians that have volunteered to shadow. Otherwise call and leave your number and have the physician call you directly. Speaking to the secretary won't get you anyway. You don't need a white coat, but wear a tie.

2. The attire for interviews is business formal. You must wear a suit.
