1. When applying to programs which do not have advanced positions, such as dermatology (where you apply during your internship year), does one do away rotations at programs as an intern, or do the away's done as a 4th year "carry over" to this application period? (in terms of helping applications as well as the "required aways" which some programs have)

2. Since applying to such positions is not done through the match, is it like college/medschool application where you can wind up with multiple acceptances and choose one?

Thanks.

I was under the impression that you apply to BOTH the intern/prelim and the categorical spot at the same time....ie apply to both in the match in 4th year. I have heard that some people apply during internship if they didn't get into their desired specialty first time around or they weren't sure what they wanted to go into....but was under the impression that it was rare to do it that way... Correct me if I'm wrong here.

You're wrong. Hehe. There are some specialties where the DO residencies are not linked, and the AOA Match does not have any advanced matching (unlike the NRMP). Other than derm, most if not all the ophtho programs are this way - not sure of others.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

*bump*

Also, is it appropriate to use some of the same LORs you used to apply to internship (for example, 2 of the ones from internships apps (3rd-4th year attendings), and one from internship)?
