After reading some of the threads about scribing, I'm pretty excited about applying for a scribing position and what it entails. I have a couple questions, though:

1) For those that scribed during college, how did you handle the time commitment? Did it affect your GPA?

2) Does anyone know of scribe companies other than ScribeAmerica and PhysAssist that have locations in Michigan? Specifically either Lansing or Detroit areas.

1) The same as any other job you might have during school. You will have to sacrifice some weekends/leisure time/going out and be more efficient with the time you do have, but I personally did not find the 16-24hrs I worked per week during the school year to be too much of a burden. I really enjoyed the experience and found a lot of motivation to do well in school that helped keep me from feeling overwhelmed. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you have to work and how much you end up enjoying it.

2) I can't help you out much here unfortunately.

1) I second Scribblers in everything. I actually found scribing during school and studying to be a sort of stress relief. Everyone is super friendly and as mentioned before, it definitely motivated me by being in the setting of doctors and seeing the work they did. Definitely strengthened my balancing of social life, academic, work, and family and it is well worth it. I sacrificed nights of going out for work, and whenever I wasnt working I was either studying or just relaxing with friends or by myself. If you really like it, you'll find a way to balance it in. I have seen scribes work for a little bit in the summer than quit in the school year cause most just can't handle it. My opinion is that they THINK they cannot handle it when really they spend the time they would working by doing something non-essential, not saying that's wrong though.

2) The only other company I know is EMA, idk if they have that where you're from but try searching them up.

Thanks for the replies! I had a part-time job this past school year as an usher but it definitely wasn't as many hrs/week as scribing would be. I'm going into my senior year and while I've finished the majority of my pre-reqs, I obviously want to maintain a high GPA as I'm most likely applying to med schools next cycle instead of this one. My spring schedule will be a little easier than my fall so I'm thinking of starting scribing (part-time) during the spring and then moving to full-time during my summer/gap year. Do you know if they would let me do that?

I am sure they would let you but not guaranteeing anything . Scribes are usually people in school or just graduated with either classes or other obligations. Just make sure you tell them before that you want to be part time then full time in the summer.

It's very likely they would let you switch to full time status after starting as a part-timer (I know of several people who have done this). I actually am quite connected with scribing in SE Michigan, feel free to PM me if you want some specific info
