Sorry if this is the wrong thread. If so, please let me know. So my partner and I need help with which school to put by the April 30 Deadline, but here's the dilemma:

  • SO #1 and SO #2 both interviewed at School A and School B
  • SO #1 was WL'd at Schools A and B (will commit to School C in the meantime and probably won't hear from WL until after the deadline)
  • SO #2 was accepted at School A and accepted at School B
What school should SO #2 commit to? We'd like to go to the same school, but it sucks that SO #2 might commit to the wrong school (assuming SO #1 gets 1 acceptance from the other school). Is there any way around this???

Hope this all makes sense and appreciate any advice!

In your example there is absolutely no difference. The only information you gave was A and B and WL at both. There is no way to tell any difference.

Maybe giving more backstory/school names would help? But doubtful. A letter to each (or one) school explaining your situation would be my best idea.

1. contact schools A and B and let them know that SO #2 would really like to go but this is the situation and is there any way to know the likelihood of SO #1 getting off the waitlist so SO #2 can pick the acceptance that is most likely to help yall stay together - (don't just call the secretary - ask to speak to someone in admissions or write a letter) assuming they give no info then:

2. SO #2 should pick the school that they would most like to go to if SO #1 is at school C. So if school A is closer to school C then maybe pick that one. If school B is SO #2's dream then that's what they should pick

3. if schools A and B are identical in geography, fit, how much SO #2 likes them then: pick the school that SO #1 has the best chance to get in to - say school A accepts a lot of students off of the waitlist - say school A is lower ranked than school B - then have SO #2 pick school A

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think we will try contacting the schools to get an idea on WL movement. Was just curious to see if there’s any way around picking a certain school come April 30. I also agree that we should assume the least favorable outcome (which would be attending School C) and having the other SO choose based on that. 🙂

Unfortunately I do not think there is any way around making a choice on April 30th. Pick based on as if one person was going to school C - but best of luck to yall and do update us how it turns out. if you want more help then perhaps share the specific schools on a x vs y thread
