Can someone explain to me how couples match for OMFS works? Specifically, if you don't match through couples match, can you still match individually?

Any information would be a huge help. Thank you.

Both applying for omfs? I would imagine the odds of couples matching into the same omfs program is extremely low

In theory this can happen, but also realize that 147 people matched from dental school last year and 225 total. With such a small competitive pool, rarely would this work out, especially since OMFS residencies are generally 2-3 resident-a-year programs. Be prepared for someone to not match and the massive sacrifice that would be for them.

The article posted by Klownzo on Couples Match states "... if a couple ranks all possible combinations of programs, including those where the partners end up in different locations and those where one partner is left unmatched, then the probability that both partners will match somewhere is the same as if each applicant had participated in the Match as an individual applicant and not part of a couple."

Unless we only rank combinations where we both match into the same program (which, we would not do), I don't see the downside in couple matching. Unless I am missing something?

The odds aren’t that bad. If 60% of applicants that do match, match their first rank, statistically, the odds of you both matching to your same first-ranked program is 36%. The odds are better as you work down your rank list. The more programs you both have to rank, the better (just as if you both were applying individually.)

I’d rank other combos to be safe that you both match somewhere obviously.
