Hi,

I'm in my last semester of undergrad and I have to choose between an anatomy/physiology course (it includes a cadaver lab), or a microbiology course. I know micro is a req. for some dental schools, but which course would be more helpful in dental school classes down the line? Also, I'm studying for and taking the DAT next semester as well, would one of these classes be more helpful on that?

BTW, I know there have been other threads with this question but none that I found related to dental school specifically.....

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I can't reply regarding dental school, but as far as the DAT goes, I would say Physiology is almost a must. The physio covered in bio 2 just doesn't go deep enough.

Overall, I'd say anatomy/phys. I took microbiology in undergrad and it helped a lot for dental school, but not nearly as much as anatomy/phys would have (I did NOT take anatomy/phys and wish I had).

Like polkadds said, phys will help a lot on the DAT (anatomy won't really) and both the anatomy and phys parts will, IMO, be more beneficial in dental school.

I am currently a dental student, and I think all bio classes are important.
I can't really tell which is better between anatomy/physio vs. micro.
If you can take both, you are golden.
GPAwise, take anatomy/physio. But some ppl might find micro easier.
For me, anatomy/physio was much more familiar info than fungi and virus stuffs.

Hi,

In my opinion,

Find out first if the dentals school you want to target requires the micro
but if it doesn't then the anatomy course ( specially with the cadaver) will help you tremendously.
You will need to disect a cadaver and that can become difficult with some students. If you can get that experience before entering dental school that will put you ahead of your classmates.
Will also make you feel more comfortable with a very difficult subject.

Good luck in whatever you decide.🙂

Anatomy hands down. How beneficial it will be after you are accepted to ds is a function of degree of detail the course will entail; not many anatomy courses will rival those offered in ds.

If a cadaver lab is offered with the anatomy/physiology course, definitely take it. This will help you far more in gross anatomy during your first year of dental school than micro will. That being said, if time allows take both as you will again revisit these courses in dental school.
