i haven't settled on all of my courses yet, but i plan on being as close to full time as i can get. At the VERY least, it looks something like:

Fall 2010
Chem I
General Bio

Spring 11
Chem II
Animal Bio

Fall 11
Organic Chem I
Biochemistry
Math - undecided

Spring 12
Organic Chem II
Calculus

Fall 12
Physics I

Spring 13
Physics II

i'll have all my required non-science courses taken care of by the time i graduate from my RN program (see http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=383731 if it helps) so any courses i put in to pad up my hours will be relevant, but probably pretty easy. i'm deliberately doing it in the fall/spring sequence so that they run pretty consecutively, and i don't have to cram a bunch of potentially difficult classes into 8 weeks and do more poorly than i would have otherwise. i'm taking summers off to so i can work full time as an RN and hopefully save up some money. Am i setting myself up, is there anything else Adcoms typically look for, anything that would benefit me in med school, etc.?

You're all lovely 😍😍

The only comments I would make are these:

1) You may want to take something other than animal bio. Is your first semester gen bio 1 or 2? You need both with labs for med school. If you are taking them both, then I would take a more relevant elective anyway. I assume you need micro and A & P for nursing. If that is the case, cell bio or genetics might be good.

2) Depending on your specific school, you may want to wait until after orgo to take biochem. My school had it as a requirement that you complete orgo 1 and 2 before taking biochem, but the CC where I am finishing my orgo, it is not a requirement. So, that really depends on the class itself as there is a wide range of what is included in biochem classes.

3) Do you need that extra math class? Most schools don't require a lot of math, although calculus will help you with some of the sciences. I think statistics would be a good math class to take. Some schools actually require that.

4) Some schools require a certain amount of English or social science classes in addition to standard pre-reqs. Check with the schools that you are interested in to find out if they do.

Good luck!!!:luck: :luck: :luck:

Thank you thank you 😍

You're right about the micro and a&p courses, i'm taking physio this summer and micro in the fall.

So no animal bio? i'd rather not take it if i can avoid it, i'm going to be a doctor, not a vet 🙄 It was listed as a requirement by my CC if i chose to get my pre-med "degree" done here, but i'd rather do my coursework at a proper university because of the lab limitations here. It's a decent school...it's not a great school.

i'll definitely check into the biochem thing - it makes total sense, i'm a little embarassed i didn't think of it before now 😳

i don't need all the math to fill any requirements, i just need it to keep on top of it all. i'm VERY good at math, but i also forget it quickly if i don't use and build upon it consistently. That make sense?

You are welcome!😍 🙂

I think you would get more of a benefit from cell or genetics than animal bio. I took zoology and never used anything I learned in that class.😴 You will get a lot of math in gen chem and physics, so that will help you keep up on it as well. I am HORRIBLE at math and am so happy that I never have to take another math class. You are better off taking as many classes as you can at a proper university. It will look better and you will probably learn more. :luck:

That's the plan 😉

i know i need to take calc I at least just to survive physics. i was thinking of taking a stats class, and i'm taking basically an intermediate algebra level problem solving course 😴They won't let me upgrade it even though i placed in pre-calc algebra, it's mandatory for my nursing degree. i haven't had math since high school (i'm 23) and this class isn't going to teach me anything...maybe take pre-calc algebra, trig, stats, calc I? Or do i even need trig?

So i sat down and played with it some more...now it looks like:

Fall 2010
Gen Chem I
Gen Bio I

Spring 11
Gen Chem II
Gen Bio II

Fall 11
Organic Chem I
Statistics

Spring 12
Organic Chem II
Calculus

Fall 12
Physics I
Biochemistry

Spring 13
Physics II

It's obviously incomplete still, it's useless to plan electives this far ahead. But i want to take evolutionary biology, genetics, cellular bio, and a few psych courses too. Any ideas where to fit it all in would help...also, i fluently speak French and German, should i learn Spanish too? It wouldn't be that difficult, i could definitely fit it in even if i took it in the summer semesters. Thank you again, SDN people make me happy 😍

One other consideration - get an MSAR and read it carefully. You will find that very few schools actually require biochemistry. If you don't love it - don't take it. Also, consider leaving time in your schedule for a Kaplan style review (consider it like another class) to get ready for the MCAT.

i looooove biochem. i can't wait to take it. also, all i'm taking for the last semester is physics II so i can do interviews and MCAT stuff...think that'll be ok?
