Cranial Nerve question - please help!

Does anyone know why the 3 cranial nerves (1, 2, 8) have Special fiber type (SVA, SSA, SSA respectively) even though they do not innervate branchial-arch derived muscles?? Thanks!

Because they are Special Senses. Pretty much any of the 5 senses are considered Special. The exception is touch, but you can replace it with the sense of Balance from your Vestibular Apparatus (CN VIII)

Don't forget about taste. Taste, Sight, Smell, and Sound are the special senses. Although there is a good overlap between taste and smell. The taste sensory fibers run along the Nervosa portion of the 7th cranial nerve and join the lingual nerve via the chorda tympani. These innervate the anterior two thirds of the tounges sense organs. The posterior third of the tounge's sense organs are innervated by the 9th cranial nerve.
