I am going to take my DAT in July. I'm already stressed enough as it is, and this has never happened to me before but...I am burned out. I don't want to study anymore for some reason, and I'm soooo tired. I'm supposed to begin studying for the DAT next week. Blehhh...has anyone else been in my situation? If so, what did you do to motivate yourself to "keep going"???
Feel free to give me some words of encouragement. I want to make sure that when I'm studying for the DAT that my attitude is good, you know?

im a first year and im burned out (at UCLA)..ive had the worst and most difficult profs...i think u should just take a nap..look at some rich orthodontist website and that will motivate u..

Take some time off and start study again.
I took a week off after Spring quarter last year, went to random places with roomie, then came back and studied for DAT the whole summer. It worked 😀

Duh.

You can't be go go go go go all the time.

Life is about finding the right balance.

Haha, you're telling me brother. This year we took 25 units in the Fall, 23 units in the Spring, and now 21 units during the Summer (oh what a nice break), equaling out to more or less 9 classes a semester, most of them hardcore sciences, so I know what you mean about being burnt out. And, we got all of a week off for summer break...yay.....

Anyways, I can say that the best refresher after being burnt out from school is to take a few days off. And by days off, I mean, don't do ANYTHING school related. Don't GO anywhere NEAR school (if you're on break, ;p), don't THINK about school. Go do something fun, go to the beach, go for a road trip - something to clear your mind, and open up some space for all that new info you're about to cram into it.

By a few, I mean at least 3, a week if you can. I know you've got to study for the DAT, but if you take time off, you'll study all the better.

After I had that week off last week, I felt incredibly refreshed, and other than the fact that I was leaving home to go back to school again, I was looking forward to starting up again.

Oh, and when you are studying, study hard, but don't kill yourself. Take time everyday to do something you enjoy, even if it's small. For example, Wake up in the morning, eat some breakfast, study for 3 hours, get some lunch, do another 3-4, and then go see a movie or something and call it a night. If you just sit in your room for 10 hours at a time, you're going to get burnt out fast.

Good luck!

Gandalf, you're right---and I thank you for your endless sage.
Gandalf does it again!!!

Seriously though, thanks guys...I think taking a break is a good idea.

When you start studying for the DAT and you realize how much you have to study, you will get your motivation. Also, I thought studying for the DAT was a nice break from school as it is something different from your classes and mostly all review.

Alright, here is what I did last year:

After the school was out, I spent solid 2 months studying for the DAT in the summer. After done with the DAT, I worked for a month, and went back to school taking 18 units. I attended interviews during this time (10+), while taking classes.. and I'm currently taking 17 units to finishing up my degree.... And I have one more week to go, and I can't concentrate hahahaha....

Your situation sounds awesome 😛. I don't blame you for not being able to focus..😀

OT: 10+ interviews is alot! Was it worth it going to that many interviews?

Here is my tip:

Attend every interview you get pre-Dec. Seriously, you will learn a lot from going interviews. I think it was well worth it since there is no practice like the real thing =). There were some interviews that I wish I had attended, like U of Michigan, but I decided against it since I do not see myself living there. My last interview happened to be at UCLA, and boy.... it was tough... I was really glad that I attended all those interviews.

To OP. I feel for you. I am sitting here watching all my friends graduate (and I should be too but needed a little extra time because I changed majors), while I am studying for finals. In between moving to a new place, starting summer school, starting biochem research, shadowing, and working 20-30 hours a week, I am wondering when the heck I'll have time to study for the DAT and how I'm supposed to when I already feel burnt out before this summer has even started.
Here is my motivation to study though and maybe it will help you too:
I took a practice DAT through Kaplan and got scores so low that I burst into tears when I saw them. That really scared me straight. If you haven't already, I'd suggest trying to take a legit practice test to see where you're at. Even though I'm so over studying right now, that's enough to keep me going. Hope you find something that works for you.

Take a year off ! A lot of people think it is a good idea

WAAAAHHHH!!!!!:scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

Just kidding buddy. Keep playing halo. We'll get a beer when I back in town.

Take a FULL week off and just be lazy and do absolutely NOTHING. Always give yourself enough sleep everyday while studying. When I was studying for the DAT. I'll sleep till 10 AM everyday. Woke up and either do practice section of the PAT or QR to start off my mornings. After that it's lunch break then I start the science section for a good 4 hours, then dinner break for an hour, then another 2 hours of science. AND here comes the most important part, go out and relax for an hour or 2!!!!! I either went out with my buddies or I went to the gym 🙂 Good luck man, it's a process we all went through!!! You'll do fine.

for everyone taking the Kaplan course, beware of their PAT practice! i got 23-25s on all of their sections of the online practice consistently and when i got to the real DAT it was so much harder i didnt finish..got a 19 ugh

i know thats not bad but just beware, i would supplement with another
PAT practice

get a job in retail...it'll motivate you really fast 🙂

nah, i kid though, you should just take some time off, a week or so to just relax! see your friends, go shopping, w/e floats your boat. then get back to serious studying. GL!

BAHahaha Gandalf! 😀

Also, I try to look at studying for the DAT in a positive light. I mean, at least it's a test on stuff I like. It could be a test on advanced microeconomics 😱 or even worse, the literature of Jane Austen 😴... It really doesn't seem so bad when I think of it like this. In fact, I kind of want to go study now...

Woah!

You may have just revolutionized my way of motivating myself to study!!! I've never thought about it like that before 😛
Thanks haha.
