Crazy IMG requirements

This is a response from an FP program in North Dakota:

"Dear Doctor:

We accept applications via ERAS; you need minimum Board scores of 80 on
all
exams; have graduated from medical school since 2001; have at least 2
years
of US clinical experience; current ECFMG certificate; and we can only
sponsor a J1 visa"

Is it me, or would this limit the IMG applicants to the most lousy ones? I mean, for an IMG to have 2 years of USCE would mean they didn't match how many years in a row? Unless they did their rotations in the US during med school, in which case there is no way they would have their ECFMG certificate yet.

In reality it probably means they'd rather die than take an IMG.

Some programs do not take "true" FMGs "right off the boat." The above post is just a nice/politicaly correct way of "getting their point across."

As leukocyte said it's quite obvious what they mean by that; AMERICANS ONLY NEED APPLY 😉 2 years of USCE only means one thing - caribbeans.

But hey, if some FP programme in the middle of nowhere wishes to restrict its' applicant pool to potentially inferior candidates, more power to them. Sometimes, when I'm in the bath, I also segregate bubbles on arbitary criteria. Then I mercilessly crush one set. It gives me a sense of power.

I happen to be at a ND FP program at the moment as a 4th year student and I know they people here doing a residency that haven't had USCE, let alone 2 years worth, so I guess that confuses me a little why they'd tell you that.

This is the program in Minot. Which one are you at?

Purifyer, I agree that 2 years USCE is another way of saying off-shore schools only. That's understandable to some degree but then they also want ecfmg certification which means they restrict their pool to off-shore candidates, who sat out at least one year.

Oh well, they won't get my application.

Seems to me to be just a way to discourage people from applying. That said, I'm sure there will be people who will ignore these "requirements" and still apply (hence the residents there who do not meet these requirements). Programs in more rural areas or considered less desirable (and as I recall, this program didn't fill all its residency spots) are bombarded with applications from IMGs/FMGs. I'll bet they are just trying to reduce the sheer burden of numbers but would perhaps consider others will good qualifications who might not exactly meet their "requirements".

Yeah, I may apply anyway. Maybe not to Minot (those requirements are just too steep) but to some other places. I'm sure some of the places would consider my application despite everything but at $25 a pop, one needs to weed out the seriously unfriendly ones.

It is not fair for us to be treated with IMG's since WE were the ones that had to study our asses off before and DURING med school (which I am SURE most IMG's didn't)

IMG's already caused us this new Step 2 CS s***. Haven't you caused enough damage already???
