Creating a Better SDN Spreadsheet

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looks pretty good!

Block scheduling?
I dunno if there's wide demand for that question, but it's definitely one of my key points when I'm looking at schools. Perhaps that goes under the 'traditional/organ systems' heading.

Do we need an "IS preference" trinary if we already have IS%?

We should totally use the drop-down function for most of these ones to keep them quick/consistent.

Ah I think that's a great idea. Can you PM me your user info so I can add you as an editor? I have no idea how to do the drop down.

Block scheduling is in. I agree that the state-preferences might be a bit wordy at the moment. Are you suggesting only including the final IS%/OS% enrolled at the school? That seems to miss out on some important information.

Yeah. To me, it seems redundant to have both because having IS preference translates into IS acceptance rates. If a school accepts 75% IS, that demonstrates their preference pretty well...and is more precise than a simple Y/N/Maybe indicator. But then, sometimes it's easier to just have a yes/no answer, so perhaps both is a good call!

I agree with previous posters that it might be overly optimistic to expect current med students from every school to chip in. I think it would be OK to have anyone contribute info and if there's disagreement over particular data, then one can ask a current student maybe. Otherwise this won't get off the ground.

I think I should also point out that this won't be the final format. If we can't get enough information for some columns we will drop them in the final version. This state preference stuff may be a good example of that.

I'm not sure how useful Male/Female is, especially since it can shifts from year to year pretty drastically and doesn't actually make a difference in decision making since it's usually ~50% anyway.

Looks really great! Is there a reason there's tabs for application, interview, and matriculant IS/OOS data but not for acceptances? I'd understand if it were because that data is harder to come by outside of USNWR subscriptions, but if would be useful information to have if it's available for enough schools.

Pretty much this. But I've added the column anyway so we'll see if we can get it.

Alright, let's get this ball rolling. What do you think about having a second page which is publicly editable. People can research a school or two and post the results on that page WITH SOURCES.
We can get a few reviewers who are responsible for going through that one, verifying info and transferring it to the non-publicly-editable 'official' version. Thoughts?

Suggestion: Attractiveness of student body score.

We just need some judges...

Some schools are very focused on community service and are more likely to invite applicants who have had substantial CS (not to be confused with computer science 😀) experience, so maybe this kind of information could be added as well? 🙂

1. Some schools allow students to pay in-state tuition rates after the first year. I'd love to see a Yes/No column for this, and for Yes schools, a link to the school's procedure for changing residency.
2. Should we include the new 2015 MCAT section? It won't be relevant for a couple more years, but future-proofing is nice.

(Sorry if either of these suggestions have been made - I skimmed before posting, and nothing jumped out at me.)

Edit: Also just noticed that University of New England is listed twice, once under Massachusetts and once under Maine. I'm pretty certain it's only in Maine, with no Massachusetts campus.

For MCAT and GPA, I think it would be more useful to have an accepted section and a matriculant section rather than just having one section and asking for comments to delineate the two.

Agree, but how readily available is that info for all schools? Matriculant data would be no problem at my school but accepted data would likely be hard to come by.

How about name the schools that accept CC credits and school that don't, I can name a few from the top of my head that don't accept them.

Do we have if PBL or some form of it is offered? How much of it is part of the curriculum. I think that might be important if it hasn't already been noted.

Can you give a progress report on this project? Are you still looking for applicants to help fill out the fields?
I haven't heard anything from OP on this in months...I have the google doc, but I'm drowning in MCAT right now, so I can't jump back in at the moment.

@Narmerguy for information on the above. Are you close to rolling it out?

Not at all. I had a personal issue come up around the time this was beginning and had to take a break from SDN, by the time I came back it seemed the momentum was gone. I'm willing to take a crack at it again, but would need to get people to all pitch in to push it out in a timely manner.

Did this spread sheet ever get filled in? Trying to finalize some of the schools I am applying to this cycle and that spread sheet would be amazing to look at!

how about being able to hide schools like due to degree type or cgpa

Well if anyone needs help for MCG when you get around to it, PM me.

Just another suggestion: we should differentiate between availability of MSTPs and non-MSTP MD/PhD programs

I'd be happy to help in any way. Going to be very bored these next couple months.
