My husband will be attending an md school and I will be attending a do.. how difficult do you think it would be to advocate for a couples match between the two. What would it entail ? I would like to match in a DO residency and we want to be in the same area.

If you are dead set on doing a DO residency, your best bet would be for each of you to enter your respective matches and then apply to one geographic area where you could both match within whatever predetermined distance. By the time your husband has to submit his rank list, you would've already matched. I don't know where you're trying to go, but just from my own experience I've seen people do this in the Philadelphia area. If you draw an hour or so radius around the city, you can encompass a ton of programs. Depending on where you want to be it could be difficult.

Yeah, you both could either enter your respective matches separately and just rank programs in one specific area or you both could enter the MD match as a couple if you're not dead set on a DO residency.

You could also do dual credited programs but I'd think you'd still be applying separately to those unless you entered the MD match with him.

You'd be pretty selfish to not enter the MD match with him. Why make him artificially limit his selection based upon the DO residency locations?

I kind of agree with this. Geographic location is definitely a limitation of osteopathic GME compared to ACGME.

Also, it is a bit early in your medical education to have decided on an AOA residency.

I don't think it's fair for us to label the poster as selfish right off the bat. Maybe I'm being sensitive, but I have a friend who just went through the exact same thing and gave up DO residencies (she was really interested in utilizing OMT in practice) for her fiance. She did consider it a sacrifice, though she was able to apply to some dual programs. Based on where the poster is looking to go, it might not limit either one of them. If they're in school in the same city (or fairly close) now, they're probably in an area that has a lot of residency options.

One bit of advice, figure out early what kinds of programs and locations you guys are interested in - it'll help in being able to find programs for the other to apply to before you need to submit applications. If one of you is really interested in a program, make sure the other keeps an open mind about the programs that "match up" in that area.
