Hey everyone,
I just wanted to help out any of you that have questions about Creighton Dental School (admissions, applications, interview, class load for D1, etc.. anything you want to ask)...I am a Freshman and I've just been in school for about 2 months but I think I can answer most of the usual questions asked in this Forum. I know I had a lot of questions when I was applying and there were not a lot of Creighton dental students here that could answer my questions...I'll try to answer everyone as soon as I can 😀 Good luck everyone!! :luck:

I really appreciate ur genuine effort to help out one of many helpless applicants like myself =)
They just updated my AADSAS status to received/under review and my question is do u know how long it took for them to actually make their final decision (either rejection or interview invite? hopefully the latter)
and my final question is (hopefully lol) how is the interview like? i know it is like a normal conversation but can u go more in depth?
thank u so much

Hey there Midiland!
No problem! I'm glad to help out!
WHen I applied my status in AADSAS was in "completed/under review" for a while. I submitted my AADSAS app around the end of July, took my DAT in September and by the time I completed their supplemental and all that I think I got my interview invite around the end of October..I interviewed in December and got my acceptance letter in the middle of January. They tend to put a lot of people on their waitlist because they consider that way more people than what they can take are completely qualified for the program...I was placed on their waitlist the first time I applied (2 years ago) and never got in; but I reapplied the next cycle and made it.

I would call the admissions office, if you haven't already, and make sure they got everything they need from you.

They interview like I guess you've heard already is very relaxed and it's more like a conversation. The best thing is that it's only one person interviewing you so it's less stressful....The questions Dr. Ayer's will ask will depend on your application and what you wrote on it (personal statement, supplemental, ect) and of course, you will probably get the "Why Creighton one"...Most of the stuff he asked me has to do with what I wrote in my application so I guess it'll be different for everyone. I didn't get any questions on my grades or GPA at all; they actuallly look at more than your grades.

I hope this helped! PM me if you get an interview invite so I can give you some tips ;o)
Good luck!

Hey,

Thanks for doing this! 🙂

I was wondering how you like the city of Omaha so far?
And, also, what are the strengths of the school compared to other ones that you interviewed?

i've got a question for you --- how much is religion emphasized during the interview? And how much is religion emphasized at the school? --thx

Hi Caloriefree,
No problem ;o)

I actually like Omaha a lot so far. Of course it's not a big city like NY or anything like that but it is a nice city overall. The weather is great so far although I've heard the winters are really cold and I'm coming from Florida so I don't know how that's gonna go ..LOL.. There's a lot of places to go and things to do (Restaurants, bars, theaters, museums, ect) and the people up here are very nice and welcoming. I haven't been around very much though b/c I just got here about 2 months ago, but so far I love it.

About the school:
I love the school so far...the teachers are very helpful at all times and seem to not be there to make you fail, like in some other schools. The upperclassmen are extremely helpful too and haven't been harsh at all towards the Freshmen kids 😳) I guess the main strengh that Creighton has is that since there's no specialties in the school you get to do a lot of clinical things you would never do in other schools...From what I've heard from upperclassmen you get a lot of complicated cases that otherwise would be given to students in specialty postgrad programs so this means more experience for you as a General dentist which I think is great...they also have a lot of community outreach programs for minorities and underserved people if you are into community service.

I hope this helped 😳)
Good luck!

Hi irvbosoff;

Like you probably know Creighton is a Jesuit-Catholic school. You will see a lot of things around the school that will remind you of that; however, there is people from many different religions and Creighton is a VERY diverse school, and I mean VERY ;o) so they don't really care what religion you are and they definitely wont base their admission decisions on your religion. It didn't come up at all in my interview and I dont think it ever will in any interview, because one of their school mottos is to embrace diversity and they really live by it.
Do they emphazise it? Well, it's not like they'll make the whole class pray before classes start or anything like that...they'll let you know when they have mass and they'll announce catholic events but you're definitely not mandated to attend anything. Basically, they'll respect your religion whatever it is. There's Muslims, Christians, Latter Saint days, Catholics, etc in my class...so like I said, they don't really care about your religion if you're qualified for the school.

Hope this helped 🙂

At my interview Dr.Ayers explained the Jesuit philosophy. 🙂

At my interview Dr.Ayers explained the Jesuit philosophy. 🙂

That's true Dr. Reo, he did explain the philosphy to me, I did forget that, thanks 🙂 .....but he just basically talked about it when he talked about the school because since it's part of what the school is he has to do it; He never related it to my religion or asked me about my religion....and when you're actually attending Creighton all of their catholic events are completely optional.

My stats are average, and I am an older student(43). I attended a small Catholic college with a similar mission to Creighton. I feel that Creighton is a great fit for me, and I really want to attend. Not to mention that Omaha would be a great place to finish raising my two young boys. I loved my undergraduate college that centered learning around service to others. Someone mentioned that Creighton values diversity in admitting students. How do you think that Creighton looks at diversity as it relates to age? Is my age a negative? Are there older students in your class?

Hi jaypea65,

I definitely don't think your age would be a negative and I don't think you should be discouraged by it. I think it might even be a plus because it's admirable. Age is just a number really and yes, there are a few older than average students in my class and on the uppermen classes. Creighton does value diversity in their admissions process even with age. I think it's great you're thinking about becoming a dentist at your age and I'm pretty sure Dr. Ayers will think that too. If you're qualified, you're qualified...your age, your race, color etc., are not that important. Since Creighton's interviews are kind of "optional" and not required I would strongly suggest that if you're invited to an interview you do come to it and talk to him...He's a really nice guy ;o)

Hope this helped! ;o)
Good luck!

Thanks for the info DC. If I am invited to an interview, I will definitely be there. I feel that if I can just gain an interview spot and explain what qualifies me to become a dentist( other than my average stats), I will have a good chance of gaining entrance.

I am still waiting to hear back from Creighton. My AADSAS status has said Application complete/Under Review for a few weeks now. do you think I should call them just to check on the status, or will that annoy them. I'm just getting antsy. also, Since i've applied, i've decided to go with the military hpsp scholarship. I hear that schools really like that program since they are taking no financial risk with you being on it. Do you think that's something I should ask them to make a note of on my app?

Hi Herme,

I would definitely call them or e-mail them just to make sure they have everything they need from you. Sometimes app. status can be deceiving on the AADSAS website. I don't think they'll be bothered if you call once or twice...unless you're calling them everyday ;o)...I can remember that my app. status for Creighton was in Complete/Under review for a while...have they been sending you letters saying your app. is complete? They sent a couple of letters to me letting me know of the status of my application. I ended up getting my interview invite around the end of September if I'm not wrong, maybe a little later, and my interview was in the middle of December. They do hold some interviews past December though.... So I would say just call them and see what's up ;o) Good luck!!

Thanks! I'll give them a call tomorrow. I did get one letter about 6 weeks ago that basically said they had everything but one LOE and that they would not notify me once it was complete. Then 2-3 weeks or so after that, my aadsas status changed to complete/under review and has been that way for about 2-3 weeks. I'm know it's complete, but I'll call them anyway.

Hi! Creighton sounds great but the price tag is a little scary...Does the school offer any scholarships? Also, could you go over a typical D1 day? How's your stress level?!

Thanks 🙂 I'm from the midwest and its sooo frustrating to not have anyone from the schools in the area be open for questions like this!!

Hi nuhskr 06,

The price tag is indeed scary but if you compare it to other private dental schools, it's not that bad. I wouldn't worry about the cost of the school yet though...if this is what you want to do just do it...just don't worry about it now. You will be able to pay for the loans when you graduate and start working. Just look at it as your little investment ;o)...There is a lot of scholarships around so you just gotta have the quals and just look for them. You can check on the ADEA, ASDA, and ADA websites...I know they have plenty of those. I don't think there's a lot of people with total tuition cost scholarships in my class, in fact I think there's none. You do have people with little $1000-2000 scholarships which is not a lot, but I guess it helps a little.

On your second question,

A typical day in DS1 for Creighton...Classes usually start at 8 AM all the way to 5 PM. We have an average of 3 to 4 different subject classes per day, and some days we have a single subject for the whole day or half day (lecture and lab). We get a lunch break of 1 hour but usually classes before lunch end a little earlier so we usually get an hour and 15 or an hour and 1/2 for lunch. We also usually finish classes a little before 5 PM. The stress level varies depending on the week and how many tests/quizzes/homework etc, we have. For example, as you can see, it took me quite some time to be able to answer this question because this week was crazy busy and crazy stressful. We had 3 back to back tests and then next week same thing...3 back to back tests, starting on Monday, ending on Friday...just think of it like a finals/midterm week in undergrad, but mostly every week for the whole semester. We get gaps of no test weeks every now and then but when there's one of those there's usually at least 1 or 2 quizzes during the week. It's stressful sometimes but it's definitely doable and even with all the stress we do have a lot of fun at school...you just gotta make sure you find ways of relieving stress and find time to have fun too.

From what I've heard from upperclassmen, Sophomore year is a little harder but a lot like 1st year. However, in 3rd and 4th years when you start doing mostly clinical stuff the stress goes down a LOT and the fun starts...so it gets better ;o)
Hope this helped! ;o)

Thanks man, I really appreciate all the help. Got my interview October 6th so all the additional information is great. Thanks again.

Everyone is very welcome! I'm glad I can help! 😳)

How does the admission process work at Creighton? Do they have a rolling admissions process? Do they interview in waves, and then select a couple of candidates that they are interested in? If I have not received an interview invite yet, is it unlikely that I will get one? I am just a little confused how this whole admission process works at different schools, and the people that I ask do not seem to know either.

This is specifically addressed on Creighton's site. Yes, they are rolling admissions.

Hi! Quick question and hopefully it won't sound too annoying... I got an email interview invite from creighton at the beginning of august but never contacted them because I heard that their interviews are totally optional, and I don't really have the money to fly out there if it doesn't matter. Did I screw myself there?

ps- I absolutely LOVE creightons mission, and that it is jesuit (pretty much why I applied) but I'm not sold on omaha yet... thanks so much for your help!!

Hi jaypea65.

Yes, like DrReo said, they do work on a rolling admissions basis. They're basically interviewing all the way until they fill all the spots. If you haven't got an interview invite yet I wouldn't say it is unlikely yet. I've heard they interview people even a few months after December. What does your status say on AADSAS? If it says "under review" you could still get an invite...You can always call Creighton and check on your app. status.

Good luck!

Hi chitownsmiles;

I honestly think the interview can do nothing else but to help you get admitted. It's a great opportunity to look at the school and see if you'd like it and It's a way for them to know you and a chance for you to show them you"re qualified for the school. I was waitlisted by Creighton the first year I applied, without an interview or ever being in Omaha at all. I didn't make it that year but the next year I did get an invite and I came to Omaha and I did get in. I"m pretty sure there's a FEW people that get in without an interview but most of my classmates came here for an interview, except for the people that went to undergrad at Creighton who are not required to interview. Creighton is a great school and Omaha is really not that bad as most people think. I was not sure about moving here at the beginning but now, I personally love the place and even if you were not planning to stay here after graduation it's definitely not a bad place to spend just 4 years of your life to become what you want to be. You got a really early interview invite which at that time probably meant more chances of admission compared to the people that's interviewing right now; I would say if you're still interested, try scheduling an interview appt for these coming monts. I got my invite way later than you did and my interview in December and I got in. They're still interviewing people so I guess they still have spots open.

Good luck!! ;o)

Creighton still says received/under review along with all of the others except Kentucky where I have been rejected.

Well, I would call Creighton, just to make sure they have everything they need from you. And then, just wait and see if you get an invite ;-)

I've called the school to check out if my application is complete and it is
It was complete a while ago
my gpa is 3.7 for both cumul and sciences
19/20/26
with 16 in RC

yet no interview invite

what's holding me back you think?? !!! "tears"

Hi dchung42,

I really don't know what to tell you. How late did you apply?? You have really good stats though, and I don't think they'd care a lot abot the 16 in RC. If you're application is complete just wait and see if you get a last minute invite. Otherwise, if you're not accepted anywhere else (let's hope you are accepted somewhere ;o)) I would just apply again.....and APPLY EARLY!!
Good luck!

Hey DrReo,

I'm pretty sure they look at a lot other things than your DAT scores...My QR score was below 17 and I still made it in. I'm pretty sure they care more about your science scores though and of course, your PA...they like to see a nice PA score.

Wow that was very early indeed...Yeah, then just I'd just wait and see...😕

Last year, I was on list of 30 students waitlisted at Creighton last year, so I thought I might have a decent shot this year. This year, I haven't received an invitation for an interview yet. I started my AADSAS in May, but my application was not officially complete until the end of August (late LOR). I would sure like to get an interview before the Dec. 1st decisions. Should I call Creighton and inquire or just wait it out?

I received an interview invite last Friday and I got the December interview slot...I think the pre-Dec 1st interviews are filled up 🙁 Otherwise I'd love to have an earlier interview. I guess I can't ask for too much right? 🙂

Hi, you said you were accepted when you re-applied, but did you take the DAT again? or applied w/ the same DAT scores?

Hi trent;

I'm sorry they haven't called you....I was also on their waitlist last year and re-applied thinking the same thing you are... It did work for me but I guess it was just luck...I don't think they even see the waitlists from the year before...I would call them and see if you can get an interview from them...In my opinion being in a waitlist in a school and reapplying should help with admissions...I'm guessing you said you were waitlisted last year on your Creighton supplemental?

Hi, you said you were accepted when you re-applied, but did you take the DAT again? or applied w/ the same DAT scores?

Hi hl11;

I did retake my DAT when I reapplied but the scores were honestly not very different from the ones I had when I applied the first time. I think what messed me up the first time was that I applied way late within the cycle...Applying early generally works ;o)

Does Creighton University allow prospective students to tour or shadow in the clinics outside of interview dates? Is it worth a road trip to see the school without an interview invitation?

Do you think they give admissions preference to students from rural areas or from the Midwest?

Thanks for offering advice to all the pre-dental students here.

Hi LuckyMiner;

I'm pretty sure you can get a tour from them if you request it. You can try calling them and see about it; same thing for shadowing in the clinics...I know they have some recruitment programs to get people interested in dental school so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get a tour of the school.

I don't think they give preference to students from anywhere...In fact, most of my classmates are not from the Midwest or from rural areas...I know they do have some sort of agreement with the state of Utah and they save some spots from Utah students but it's only like 10.

Hope this helped! and you're welcome! I'm glad I can help! ;o)

Hey dc I had an interview in early september with creighton. What do you think the possiblity is of hearing something within a couple of days of Dec.1?

Hi masheahan;

Well, I really can't answer that 😳( Sorry... it depends on a lot of things...if you didn't hear from them this past Dec 1st, just wait until their 2nd round of acceptances in Jan 15th...anything could happen ...hopefully good things! 😀

Good luck!

Do you know what percentage of your class is those who were excepted later than dec.1?

No, I'm not sure about that, sorry. I really haven't asked around. :scared: 🙄

thanks anyway, good luck on finals

The lady that I spoke to at Creighton said that they have sent out enough acceptances to fill there entire class..BUT that never once has everyone accepted so the spots that people decline by Jan 15th will then be filled with new acceptances. 🙂 Hope this answers your question

thanks predentstud, I will keep my fingers crossed:xf:
