Creighton Phoenix
Pros
  • Same school as SO
  • People seem super nice
  • Mission

Cons
  • Tuition
  • Lack of research

U of A Phoenix
Pros
  • Cheaper tuition possible if I become an AZ resident
  • More research opportunities?

Cons
  • Diff schedule from my husband

Summary: It's been my husband's and my dream to attend the same med school together, but the possibility of in-state tuition for 3 of the 4 years is nice for our loans. Also want to see if the research connections will be worth it. Any insight from former or current students would be amazing!

I would pick UofA. Better program and cheaper. And you still get to stay in the same city as your hubby.

I got an A at U of A Phoenix and am awaiting decision post-interview at Creighton.

Both are excellent institutions, but I lean in favor of U of A when it comes to med school in Phoenix.

UAPHX has been around longer in the Phoenix area (~2007) and has more established connections, such as Phoenix Children's Hospital (and research institute) and Banner Medical Institute. Creighton AZ is newer (2021) and still building its network from those organizations not already affiliated with UAPHX or Mayo Clinic. During my interview at Creighton AZ, they (don't remember if it was faculty or student) danced around the question of research availability and said it is possible to do research. It didn't comfort me that abundant opportunities weren't advertised like they were by UAPHX faculty and students.

The price is also important. Creighton's Omaha Campus is well worth the price with the research, affiliations, and alumni connections available to you (imo, a sleeper school), but Creighton AZ is a different story. Becoming a resident at UAPHX is going to save your husband and you a lot in the long run.

Regarding having a similar schedule, this may true for your first year (you as an M1 and him as an M2), but your schedules will look vastly different once he jumps into clinicals/rotations in MS3 and MS4.

Finally, congratulations on being in such an amazing position to know you will be going to med school with (or potentially near) your husband. You are in an awesome predicament haha. At the end of the day, no one would fault you for choosing Creighton to complete your dream of going to the same med school with your hubby, but it is good to be as informed as you can before you commit.

Thanks for the detailed response! So much to think about, and yes, I'm grateful to even have this predicament! Congrats on your A!!!

I'm wondering for Creighton research, if they have connections to Banner as well. I saw some grads from Creighton Phoenix from their match list/news reports who had done research with Banner and were accepted to Mayo for residency. Also wondering if I get research connections I can pass them on to my husband, who will probably try to match into a more competitive specialty than me (based on our preliminary interests)... my guess is for Creighton you'd have to do more cold-emailing/calling and take the initiative yourself since the institutions like Banner are already there, and maybe compete with all the other med students in the city for the research you want.

I am sure they have some sort of connection but Banner's main affiliation (as advertised on the site) is with UAPHX, seems their students would get first pick at the lot. Creighton students may be hopping onto the remaining research projects. Not sure if you would be able to pass on opportunities to your husband.

Another important consideration is if you are potentially interested in pediatrics. UAPHX has a really close partnership with Phoenix Children's Hospital/Research Institute. It is another huge advantage of UAPHX
