Hey Guys,

I have a question. I've been accepted to Creighton and I just got an interview invite to Temple. I have several questions that will determine if I will accept the interview. I liked the vibe that Creighton gave me.

1. Has anyone been in the situation where they were accepted to both and chose one school over the other? What were your reasons and are you happy with them now?

2. Will my opportunities at residency be significantly limited if I attended Creighton because there are so many hospitals around Philly?

3. Any reason to believe the medical education at one is better than the other?

Thanks guys.

I was in the same position as you a while ago with an acceptance to Creighton and an invite from Temple. I ended up declining my interview at Temple, mostly because I didn't like philly that much (personal preference) and because I was short on cash (plus I have some other acceptances too that I would prefer over Temple). I can give you my perspective on 2 and 3 though.

You can go to any residency from any medical school, so it shouldn't matter that much which school you attend. That said, I've heard that you have a higher chance of matching into a residency at your home institution or at hospitals that have connections to your school. So, I guess that loosely translates that if you go to Creighton, you have a higher chance of getting into a residency in Omaha (if you choose to stay in Omaha), or if you go to Temple, you have a higher chance of staying in philly (if you choose to do so).

3. Any reason to believe the medical education at one is better than the other?

All medical schools teach the same thing, so there's no big difference. I believe I read somewhere that the medical school accrediting board makes sure that there are no significant differences so that all graduating med students come out with the same level of clinical/practicing knowledge. Again, that said, many of my friends say that philly (since it's in a larger city/area) serves a larger population and that you'll see more things in your clinical training vs. in Omaha.

I think if you can really spare the $$, go to the Temple interview and check out the school. I also heard that Temple tuition is a lot cheaper than Creighton, so I think it's worth checking out.

Thanks for the detailed reply qmcat. I think I'm gonna head out there and see what Temple has to offer me.

Sorry for not answering in the format you posed the question, but my situation doesn't really fit the mold. I still wanted to offer feedback, though.

My Situation

Creighton: Interviewed --> Waitlisted

Temple: Interviewed --> Accepted

I preferred Creighton on many levels. I loved the friendly, laid back atmosphere. The campus is beautiful and much safer than Temple. I love all of the stress-relieving measures that the school has gone to in order to create a psychologically healthy environment for students. I loved the quaint little hospital... I felt like I could get to know everyone in there (from attendings to janitors) by the time I left after four years. It's extremely important to me that I feel at home at the place I work and feel like my co-workers are my extended family, no matter their place on the vocational totem pole... but that's probably not ALL THAT common.

Even if I got accepted to Creighton, however, I wouldn't attend over Temple. Why? My girlfriend (of 8.5 yrs) would never be willing to live in Omaha. Yes, she has me in check.

I'd still recommend visiting / interviewing at Temple, since a) you don't know what you'll think of a school until you get there and b) you should always interview at a school if you think there's a CHANCE you might want to go there over your other acceptances - you want to open doors, never close them, until you must.

Good luck to you and congrats on the accept to Creighton.

Thanks for the advice majahops. I see that you were accepted to Jefferson and waitlisted at Creighton. I thought it was strange that I was waitlisted at Jefferson and accepted to Creighton.

I got the same feeling about Creighton that you had. Just that I could get to know everyone while I was there and that it is a good learning environment. If you didn't have a girlfriend and were accepted to Creighton, would you have considered going there instead of Jefferson?

I'd of gone to Creighton in a heartbeat, if that were the case. Even though I absolutely LOVED Jefferson. However, BU vs. Creighton would be a harder decision. 🙂

I actually just reconsidered the question and I don't know what I'd do between Creighton and Jeff if I didn't have a gf... I really liked Jeff a lot. Gosh. In a sick way, I sort of wish I only got into one school. 🙁

I think you sort of wish you were single.
