I think a premed advisor suggested doing a criminal background check on ourselves to make sure that there're no forgotten records or records by error, because apparently that's happened before. And especially with little things you just passed by and forgot about from a long while ago or something... and that it would suck when you check on the "no" box (and not even on purpose), though the school finds some records on you. Has anyone followed up and done a CBC on yourself for this reason? I'm considering it but I'd think it would be costly...?

I don't think it would be really hard to recall if you've ever done something that would go one your record.

The only way I might see you not being sure is if lets say you got an MIP, but that was expunged, and you just wanted to check and make sure it was by running a CBC. Other than that I can't imagine you would NOT KNOW if you have a record.

You know, I have heard about that before, probably on this site. I never have done it but I thought about it. usually schools care about felonies, and you don't tend to forget about those...

If it was something minor like a non-violent misdemeanor it probably won't make a huge difference anyway (DUI most likely will though).

It's not a bad idea. You want to have official transcripts from all of your schools so you know exaxctly what they're seeing; this is no different.

I'd like to know exactly what they're seeing. Whether it be the expunged maliscious mischief in '97, the dropped statutory rape charge in '99, the no contest plea to a felon in possesion of a concealed weapon in '00, or the conspiracy to cross state borders for trading of fraudulent baseball cards in '04.

Better safe than sorry IMO.

The reason I wondered about whether this would be useful or not is because I -may- have gotten in trouble with something but I'm not sure... (you'd think I'd know, right?!)

Edit: Anyway... I think I might be thinking way too much about this. Getting rid of the details. But you guys are right, I think I WOULD know, yes. 🙂 But just in case. I'd like for my application to be mistake-proof as much as possible!

If it's not too difficult to run one on yourself, just do it. You'll be able to put this behind you.

You never went to court and you never were summoned, I doubt there is anything there.

Man I hope this was hypothetical

For peace of mind, run a check.

But really, could you possibly have forgotten murdering someone?🙄

Okay, so for the peace of my mind, I may 🙂

Do you know where one could get a CBC for oneself relatively quickly without investing too much $?

The reason your advisor says that is because it's a pretty common thread here for people to say something along the lines of "I got a ticket for drinking underage in [college town] 3 years ago. Do I need to report this on [primary/secondary application]?"

Then there's all sorts of legal debate among a bunch of college undergraduates studying basic science.

Honestly--if somebody is that worried about whether or not to report a given citation, TALK TO A LAWYER. Even running a background check on yourself doesn't guarantee that the company your med school uses won't find what the former company didn't...or arrive to a different conclusion.

Again, ONLY A LAWYER can tell you if [Situation X] needs to be reported as a misdemeanor or if [Question Y] on a secondary from a school needs to be answered with a "yes."

To calm the nerves of people who are in this situation, the response from lawyers is often "No, this is a civil ordinance violation...or civil infraction...etc" and doesn't need to be declared as a misdemeanor. But the only way you can know is to ask.

This "just to make sure in case you forget" stuff is bullcrap. You know if you've gotten a ticket in the past that might be worrisome. Take the appropriate steps if this is your case.

For a second there, I thought you meant blood count by CBC. Wow, I really need sleep. SO much for being a gunner and getting bond's blessing.
