I got Accepted into a school already but they haven't conducted the background check. I just got a traffic citation yesterday (31mph) over speed limit. Didn't notice the speed sign dropping to 35 on the highway.

Would this affect my admission ?

Is this serious?

Haha no. Why would you think it would have any bearing?

Do traffic violations even show up on a background check? I'm sorry to be rude, but I don't think a speeding ticket will have your med school acceptance rescinded.

If you were drunk, that would be another story.

Alright thank you , cause the cop made it seem like a huge deal. "Criminal violation"

I would look into it a bit more. In some states, it could have a criminal charge from what I thought... Going 31 mph over the speed limit sounds pretty serious. I think you can get the charge reduced though...

I agree. He should look into it more. Using Virginia as an example, it is a class I misdemeanor - reckless driving if you drive above 80 mph and/or 20 mph over the posted speed limit. He should be able to determine from the citation if it's an infraction versus a criminal charge.

We don't take kindly to speed abusing rebels in this profession. Better go back to the racetrack now speed racer because osteopath school is going bye-bye.

Look and see if it's simply a traffic infraction or a criminal offense. The law differs between jurisdictions. In Virginia, that would be a class I misdemeanor (the highest class of misdemeanor) - reckless driving. Just because you weren't hauled off to jail and/or Mirandized doesn't mean it wasn't a criminal offense. You should also be able to call the clerk of court or go to a police station within the jurisdiction to better understand what your ticket means.

I may be wrong, but I believe you must inform the school of these things. If it turns out to be a criminal offense, you don't want it to come back to bite you in the butt come third year.

And then there are other states like New Jersey where a DUI is not a
Criminal offense whatsoever. Ugh.. Why can't all the states be consistent with each other ?

It's not. Look at other sites. This site just lost offenses and charges

In my state it is a criminal offense.... I guess I'll go to court and fight it with a lawyer.

It's not a DUI or reckless driving. Simply going 66mph (65 is highway speed) on highway but ramp is 35 mph, got the ticket before I even reached the ramp.

You think it would affect me ? When should I let them know ? After court hearing or before. If so, Do I phrase it as a traffic citation , or a criminal offense traffic citation?

You should let the school know as soon as possible. I would check your admissions material first though. Sometimes, it has information about these kinds of things. When it most affects you is in your 3rd and 4th years. The hospital rotation sites are most concerned about the criminal background checks.

It could affect you, but I doubt it. It's neither a violent crime nor a drug related offense. Ultimately, it's up to your school though.

Tell the school exactly what the charge is, etc.

Tell that cop to go back to school and get a real job instead of sucking money from innocent people

I'm a Virginia resident and I had reckless driving once after I wrecked. It totally should have been failure to maintain control because I accidentally went into the gravel and wasn't texting or anything, but some cops like to give stricter stuff. It's actually pretty easy to get out of though - I went to "driving school" for a day. It was basically a $75 class that lasts from about 9-5 on a Saturday and you get a certificate in the end. Then you show that certificate to the DMV and the courthouse and the reckless driving offense is wiped off your record like it never happened. You don't even get an increase in insurance prices if you get it done quickly enough. Just ask to do driving school!

Strongly disagree. Until your court hearing, you have been charged but not convicted. These types of offenses, like the above poster noted, are very often reduced or eliminated by taking a class and paying a fine. Do not give your school a reason to rescind your application preemptively. Go to court in a nice suit, say "Yes sir, no sir" to the judge, and hope for the best.

I wouldn't worry too much. I had to list a traffic ticket on my app (72/55) because in Ohio speeding is a misdemeanor regardless of how fast you are going over the limit. It never got brought up and it didn't show up on my background check (maybe because it was when I was a minor).

You're right. He should wait for the verdict. Conviction, if it happens, most likely needs to be reported though.

Unlikely to affect your application, but 31 over could definitely bear reporting when the dust settles. I think 25+ here is an arrestable offense/misdemeanor.

Get a lawyer just in case.
