Long story short, the DEA arrested my stepdad a few years back, I briefly mention this in one of my 'hardship' essay prompts and was wondering if it is appropriate to have? My own record is clean but I'm not sure if his arrest and conviction would be used against me? or make me look bad? (no, I did not know he was doing anything)

Oh gosh. Sorry that happened. 🙁 I'm not sure- I don't think that anyone is out to get you. I think the Certiphi background check is very basic... and it applies to YOUR record, not others'. I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you were charged with a crime or were involved significantly. I don't think this will make you look bad. If anything, you can spin the situation to make yourself look like a stronger applicant. You're taking the high road and pursuing an education. Obviously you aren't on drugs or selling them, either. Make it a story about learning from mistakes and crafting your own story. I think it's wholly appropriate to write about or talk about if it's affected you significantly. Just be careful that talking about it doesn't move into the realm of sappiness for the sake of it or emotional exploitation. Not that you would do that, but if you aren't a good writer, things can come off as forced. Just a warning! Good luck. From what I've read, I see no red flags.

His records are his own. It has no bearing on yours when you undergo your background check should you receive an acceptance.
