I was convicted of a crime several years ago. The crime was domestic in nature. I made a mistake and was convicted. Several years later, My record was expunged and my crime was reduced to a misdeameanor. Will this bar me from getting a pharmacist license in California. Please give advice. I am worried. I realize I had made a mistake in my past, but I have learned from it. I hope it wont prevent me from being a pharmacist. Your input would be appreciated.

PS...I realized I made a great mistake, so be gentle people....I am just getting some direction to help me out in my future...

Thank you🙁

The most reliable way to get the correct answer is to go to the CA state board of pharmacy website and see what they have to say.

I will do that, but I was hoping to get some opinions from this site

My understanding, based on previous threads on the same topic, is that if it's expunged you should be fine. I have no experience in the matter though, so you may wish to search the prior threads in both pharmacy and pre-pharm I'd used the "advanced search" option limit to those two forums and search for threads 6 months old and older.

As long its not a drug conviction you should be all right. Make sure your honest and tell the truth and dont lie about it. Our society is a forgiving society when individuals own up to their mistakes.

I agree with DrugDoc that the board of pharmacy is the ultimate source of the answer to your question. I am confused though - I thought if your record was expunged, there was nothing left? But you said it was reduced to misdemeanor, so it is still on your record?

Either way, I just renewed my tech license and it asked if I had any convictions for felony OR misdemeanor (and didn't specify only drug related). That being said, I don't think it prevents you from becoming licensed, you just have to be prepared to do some additional explaining and then the board makes the decision.

I was told that any crimes related to drugs or alcohol sends a red flag for the board as an indicator for possible future drug related problems i.e. abuse, selling and stealing of durges, etc......that is why drug / alcohol related crimes are not given license...

Absolutely a drug or alcohol related crime would raise red flags - my point was that regardless of the nature of the conviction, the OP will have to disclose it on applications. I looked up the laws for Texas (the easiest to find!) and they did not have "domestic crimes" on their list of offenses, but they did have a general listing from crimes of "moral terpitude". IMHO, I don't think it will prevent the OP from getting a license, but I honestly have no idea how the California BOP works! I also don't know how an expungement impacts this situation.

If you don't want to contact the BOP and you are a current student, contact someone in your office of student affairs - (we have a liasion who helps students with their licensure applications) - they may be able to answer such a question as well.

it seems like he is still kinda of screwed because he has to tell all future employers of the conviction

true....BUT, as time goes on, it will matter less and less. Kind of like a bankruptcy on a credit report. All he needs is to find that one employer that will give him a chance, and after reading his appeal, I would hire him. Of course, he has less opportunity to "jump around" between employers for the first 10 years or so.

But I think once he clears 30-35, he can attribute his DUI to youthful indiscretion.

I think we are all telling him he will be ok as long he has made that one mistakeand he has learned from it......
