I am a 2nd year med student in South Africa. At our medical school we required to do a 2 and a half year research project. Myself and 3 other med students are in a group and our topic is critical care. We have been assigned a study leader who is a qualified intensivist. We have not met with him yet and as critical care medicine covers such a variety of things both medical and surgical, I would like to have some ideas for our first meeting with him. Our research obviously has to be in the realm 2nd year med students. I would just like to know some examples of research projects in this field someone in my position could do? Also, I would like to do research that actually matters and not just to pass this module.

Research is a broad subject. You should first decide whether you'd like to focus on basic science, clinical trials, health services research, etc. Practically speaking, a student project should be a project that can be undertaken and a completed in a relatively short time period. This usually means that clinical trial research or large prospective studies are not practical. There are some basic science projects that are practical. Large database studies are great, though access to large databases is mentor/attending dependent. If you give more details, you would get more help.
