So I was on a case earlier, and a CRNA introduced herself to the patient as the “anesthesiologist.” And then when the patient said “Dr. _____,” the CRNA didn’t even bother correcting the patient. Is this common? Didn’t feel right to me

Well they will argue with you up and down that they can call themselves that due to AANA recent name change. Was there a “nurse” in front of it? What was your role in this? It better not be common and I venture to say it isn’t. Many times they will not correct it. I would certainly bring it up to them and then the chair or someone in charge. It is absolutely misleading.

No she didn’t mention nurse once but CRNA was the only credential on her badge.

I was the med student so not really my place and tbh just thought it was sort of tacky to try to trick the patient for her own ego

This is the type of deliberate patient deception that thr AANA, the AANP and other "advanced" nursing societies have been approving for years. The nurse gets to pretend to be doctor with the wholehearted support of nursing leadership.

Same s*** different day. I never introduced myself as Doctor during residency to any of my fellow residents or attendings. It was always hi I'm chido, ortho resident.

Even when I was in clinic seeing patients I would introduce myself as a resident and rarely use the title doctor. All these people have a chip on their shoulders. I don't even call myself doctor right now when I walk into rooms during office hours. Although I do introduce my medical students as student Doctor John or Susie. 😁

Blur the lines, that's what they're trying to do

Our local SRNAs do a group project for their doctorate. Yep that’s right, group work, like it’s high school. One groups project was a retrospective review of pain control after blocks. They aren’t even allowed to perform blocks here. This is so they can call themselves Doctor.

While on the topic, our local nursing school has a “white coat ceremony.” Trust me, nothing is sacred anymore. Everyone gets a trophy.

the question is, how much are you willing to sacrifice in this fight?

complaining on sdn is ok but it takes guts, persistence and there is risk of loss of your job to possibly bring a change...until you get to the next hospital

for those in Texas, TMB takes it very seriously...if you go and look at press releases, a lot of them are about reprimanding midlevel on basis of "practicing medicine without a license"
Remember the days when doctors practiced medicine and nurses practiced nursing? Now everyone even RNs without an advance degree claim they are in medicine. It’s a crazy world.

Well AANP says they practice healthcare.. whatever the f that means.
