Hi all. I am an Ohio resident and was recently admitted to OUCOM. I only sent secondaries there and to CCOM (will send one to PCOM as well). Anyways, I have an interview scheduled at CCOM for 11/8. Now for the advice/question.

I am quite familiar with the CORE system for OUCOM and the residency opportunities. I haven't been able to find out much about CCOM's internship/residency opportunities. The reason that I ask is I am wondering if interviewing there is worth the time. I am happy with OUCOM's system but am not sure what advantages CCOM may have. Additionally, tuition at CCOM is the same as OUCOM's tuition and living expenses combined.

If any of you guys/gals had to choose between CCOM and OUCOM (yes, unlikey comparision, I know) I'd love to hear why you chose one or the other. In fact, even if you didnt have to choose between the two and you attend one of these schools, Id love to have your input as well.

Thanks
Adrian

Well....first of all, I am not writing to try to help sway your decision.

But I will try to give just a little superficial information.

First, the CORE System is not an OUCOM system. If I'm not mistaken is just a group of residency programs that have joined in some manner in the state of Ohio.

As far as individual schools go, there are no "residency systems". A graduate from any medical school has an opportunity to go anywhere. ( now there are certain programs which tend to take more students from one place or another, but I can assure you that there would generally be no great advantage by attending OUCOM).

As far as CCOM is concerned, I believe that there are recent years match lists on the the website. It might possibly be on the intranet site though.
I am more than impressed with the match lists. I recently met some CCOM grads here on campus who are in residency programs at Northwestern, University of Chicago and Loyola.

Honestly, that doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Because, as I said before, whichever school you attend you have the same opportunity to go to residency anywhere. A good thing to do is to do electives in a specialty you want to go into in at the hospital you want to apply to.

As for you interview being a waste of time.........I think that is never the case! You should always interview! You never know what you might like or dislike about a school. And I will tell you that I came here from California because of the CCOM's impressive clinical rotations. And I am still very happy in my decision to come here.

Good Luck to you Adrian, and I actually might meet you at the interview. I am one of the CCOM Student Ambassadors here.

Umm...yes it is an OU-COM system. It's not a group of residency programs, it's a group of hospitals (at least three of which have been named by USNews as top 50 hospitals in certain specialties) that offer rotations for OU-COM's 3rd and 4th year students. Check it out at http://www.ohiocore.org/

The CORE also offers residency programs in several specialties (pretty much anything you want, such as dermatology or neurosurgery. Of course, those are pretty competitive).

I can answer your question directly. I grew up and went to college in Ohio, and when I began applying to schools I was about 99% certain I would go to OU. After getting in to both schools I spent a lot of time deciding which would be better for me.

At least come and take a look around here. I ultimately decided to give up the in-state tuition (which is nice) to come here. It was time to get out of Ohio for a little while and there definitely are so many things, places, people in this area that you will not see in Ohio.

So, I would come for the interview and see what you think. If you have more questions send me a PM and I can give you my email and if you want to talk when you come for your interview I can talk to you more about why I chose to come here.

Ok, well I decided to keep the interview as I have just scheduled a hotel room.

Could someone explain to me how years 3 and 4 work?

Thanks
Adrian

First off, you'll get good training at either school (I'm from OUCOM). I'm good friends with BPlato and I think he would agree. The big decision is big city vs. small town and in-state vs. out of state tuition. We have a pretty small class size too (100-110) which could be good or bad. The 3rd and 4th year go pretty much the same at any medical school. In the 3rd year you rotate through FP, IM, Peds, Surgery, Psych, and OB/Gyn which are the subjects tested on the COMLEX step 2. You usually do a month of each and then you will probably have requirements in IM and Surg subspecialities and the duration varies from school to school. You also want to try to do a month in something you're possibly interested in. The 4th year is mostly elective time you can use to get exposure to areas that complement what you want to do and you can out-rotate to figure out where you want to do internship/residency. You'll also have to do EM at some point, usually 4th year, and you may have elective requirements like primary care, IM, or Surgery. The CORE are the training hospitals for 3rd and 4th OUCOM students primarily, but we also have students from places like KCOM, KC, and Des Moines that are based there. The interns and residents you work under could be from any DO school. Hope this helps.

BP, we missed you at homecoming!!!!

Perhaps I should clarify. I am familiar with the CORE system and was wondering if CCOM had a similar website etc so that I could see the hospitals I would be working at.

here's the clinical ed website: http://mwunet.midwestern.edu/academic/CCOMClinEd/index.htm

obviously you can schedule to do electives anywhere you want.
If I'm not mistaken.....(and I guess I was about the CORE system! 😀 ), we get 1 month of elective time in year 3....and 5 months of electives in year 4.
We are just beginning to get the info now as 2nd years, so it's still a little early to know all of the details about our clinical rotations.

And I agree that Brian would be a great guy to talk to. Even though he is still a little upset about Ohio State's football season! 😱

As a LECOM student, some of the CORE hospitals are associated with us too. My rotations will be at CORE hospitals

You're correct about the # of electives in 3rd/4th year. Also remember one of those months can be used as vacation. As far as a list of hospitals, I don't think you'll find a comprehensive one because there are literally dozens of hospitals that our students rotate through. And, the list of sites can change on a yearly basis. I think it's safe to say that our students do get very good exposure during our clinical years, and 6 months into it I've been pretty happy so far with things.
