Is it looked down upon to graduate from a Cal State vs UC? How many people here are in pharmacy school that graduated from a CAL STATE?

IOP, Cal state is harder because people who have like 3.9 will only show up as 3.0. I have most B+ but my average is only 3.0 because of the grading system. 🙁

words of encouragement please!!!

B+ is around a 3.3 average at a UC anyway. As for schools looking down on Cal State graduates, I remember at an interview at USC about 2 years ago, in a group of 25, about half of the interviewees were from UC Davis and UC Berkeley, and about a quarter of them were from San Diego State U and CSU San Bernardino. 2 of the USC students who greeted us at the lounge were from CSU San Bernardino, so it doesn't seem like USC look down on CSU graduates. As for UCSF, on their website, didn't they state they don't give any preference to certain CA schools?

I'm walking at CSUSB tomorrow (finish my BS Chemistry/Biochemistry in Winter 07) I hope I'll be one of those that gets in. Interviewed at Oregon State, hope to interview at USC, Western and LLU

How would someone with a 3.9 have a 3.0?? And you also have to realize the flipside.. when you get an "A-" isn't it worth 4.0? I'm not sure how calstates grade but I think thats how they do it by your descriptions. At UC an "A-" is only worth 3.7 and a B- is only worth a 2.7 and so on..

Doesn't it look better to have a 3.6 GPA from a CSU than a 3.3 from a UC? This is why I chose to go to CSU rather than a UC because I knew that my GPA would be better at a CSU. Me and another classmate from CSU Hayward got accepted to Touro for next year. Yay!

Farmercyst,

What's ur GPA?

3.57 Though that'll change with new grades. I got 3 A's and two B's this semester/quarter (A's in Anat/Phys, Pharmacy Calcs, Intro to pharm technology; B's in BioInorganic chemistry and Cell Physiology) The A's were semester units at CC, the B's were quarter Units at CSUSB . It should have an overall positive effect on PharmCAS. My science GPA is 3.49 but that'll prob go down a little with 1 A and 2 B's. I've got four more classes next quarter/semester. :luck:

Regarding GPA at CS vs UC, unless the school gets a high number of CA students I doubt it matters that much. For those that do (UCSD,UCSF,USC,LLU,Western, and UOP) I'd bet UC's show at least some sort of preference to UC's. Not that it's policy, but if you think about it ADCOM's can afford to act like alumni sometimes. What alumnus wouldn't want to help another alumnus out if they can get away with it and make it look ethical. There are enough other variables out there that you'd have a hard time proving one side or the other (me being cynical I just see it this way.) The private schools most likely will base their view on what they've seen from the other schools. If CSU students do just as well at their school as UC students it will unlikely have an affect on admissions, but if they see UC students tend to do well while CSU students struggle, then they'll probably take that into consideration.

If you have a good GPA, UC/CSU doesnt matter. The greatest thing about CSU has been that you interact w/ profs more so i think my letters of rec are more personal, also, there is mandatory research requirement for chem/biochem BS so every graduate has 1-4 yrs of research experience when they graduate. I think that if you dont have a crapload of extracurrics the research goes a long way, especially if you've published/presented.

I've never had to do research (at least not benchwork.) Maybe research is only required at some CSU's. I had a lower division that didn't count toward anything at CSU since it was taken at CC. You have to do research to get departmental honors, but not to graduate. I agree with the faculty interaction though. Most of the Chem Dept knows me personally and I could easily get a LOR from almost anyone in the dept.

No - I don't think it matters if you graduate from a UC or CSU for admission to a UC pharmacy school. The difficulty of the classes matter...so you want to take the most difficult courses available at your insitution.

UC Alumni have NO pull at all at any of the UC graduate schools - I KNOW!!!!

I have no knowledge about the private schools.
