It's alright though and it's only the first quarter. Once you're in the system the following quarter should be a breeze when it comes to registering for classes. Plus I figure most of you are still fairly young, so you still have all the time in the world 🙂.

do u go to Cal aka ucb o.o? if so, the official transcript with degree-post won't be mailed after 10 weeks since 5/30

Why yes, yes I do. I did not know they need it with the degree post. o.o I thought they just needed it with our classes that we took last quarter. I guess I better get another order out...

See, I ordered from bearfacts right before I was cut off and not considered a student anymore. xD I didn't know that CSU required your degree to be on that official transcript. (I sent a partial one and then ordered one on the 29th and UC Berkeley confirmed that they sent it out to the schools as needed. It just doesn't have my degree/graduation date on it, but I didn't realize we needed that. )

I just love how they said "include graduation date if applicable," but in reality they "MUST need it 100%" in order grant you access for enrolling classes -_______-"


Yeah, I didn't know that till 6/11, which was the day for open enrollment

For anyone that is doing the academic enhancer track, is it mandatory that we take Epidemiology, Biochemistry, and Virology or can we choose other classes in the advanced curriculum? I know a seminar is mandatory so I signed up for one. Also, is it normal that I don't see any lab classes? All I can see are lectures.

I'm not doing the academic enhacer track, but I could answer your question 🙂. No it is not mandatory to take those classes for the Academic Enhancer Track. You have the option of taking whatever advance science course as long as it is within the AE Track curriculum. Any of the following classes will work: (Taken from PHAP website)

Academic Enhancer Track (AE) Courses (44-68 units) &#8211; starts Fall & Winter quarters


To complete the CE track, students must complete 10-12 courses selected from the following list:

  1. Genetics (Biol 3121 &#8211; 5 units)
  2. Developmental Genetics Analysis (Biol 3122 &#8211; 4 units)
  3. Mammalian Physiology (Biol 4150 &#8211; 4 units)
  4. Medical Physiology (Biol 4160 &#8211; 4 units)
  5. Molecular Microbiology (Biol 4143 &#8211; 4 units)
  6. Epidemiology (Biol 3410 &#8211; 4 units)
  7. Biomedical Parasitology (Biol 3441 &#8211; 4 units)
  8. Cooperative Education (Biol 3898 &#8211; 1-4 units)
  9. Immunology (Biol 4430 &#8211; 4 units)
  10. Biochemistry (Chemistry 4411or 4412 or 4413 &#8211; 4 units each)
  11. Neurobiology (Biol 4510 &#8211; 4 units)
  12. Molecular Cell Biology (Biol 4455 &#8211; 4 units)
  13. Virology (Biol 4441 &#8211; 4 units)
  14. Environmental Toxicology (Biol 4517 &#8211; 4 units)
  15. Comparative Physiology (Biol 4504 &#8211; 4 units)
  16. Major Organ Biochemistry (Chem 4460 &#8211; 4 units)
  17. Issues in Chemistry (Chem 6999 &#8211; 4 units)
  18. Protein Structure (Chem 4440 &#8211; 3 units)
  19. Nucleic Acid Chemistry (Chem 4450 &#8211; 3 units)
  20. Biology Seminar/Issues in Biological Sc. (Biol 3999/4820 &#8211; 2/2 units)
  21. Independent Study (Biol 4900 &#8211; 1-4 units)
However, I'm not sure if all of these classes are available every quarter and they must be within the PHAP schedule of courses as well in order to register for them. As for missing lab classes, not sure about that one.

For anyone that is doing financial aid, how long did it take for you guys to receive your Student Aid Report? This is my first time signing up for financial aid so I am a bit lost. Under my "to do list" I am told to sign a master promissory not but I was told that I am not supposed to sign that until I know how much aid I am going to receive.

I don't remember how long it takes but it didn't take too long, roughly about 2 weeks. You should go ahead and sign and submit your master promissory note now. It is still required regardless of how much financial aid you are requesting. Maximum for Post Bacc in the form of student loans is $12,500 per year and is considered 5th year undergraduate status, not graduate school status.

Oh okay. That is lower than I thought and I thought we would be considered graduate status? Looks like I need to start looking at private loans too.

Cliff, do you know if it's okay to fax in our documents? Because there is a fax number, I'm just not sure if they'll accept it. (I've tried emailing...and they take forever to reply...)

Yes you can fax documents. Just make sure you fax to the correct department with phone number listed on the documents you are faxing. They tend to do things a little slower in responding. Usually when they receive your documents they remove it from the the 'to do list' on your account. However, the post bacc status form does not get removed from the list. Instead it will have a "received" status. Other than that all other 'to do' items should be removed from the list within a week of receiving your forms.

I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. My post bacc status on my to do list still says initiated. I thought that in order to complete this item, all I had to do was change my option to graduate on my FAFSA. However, it's been almost a month and this remains the only item that has not been received/processed. Is there actually a form I am supposed to fill out instead? Thanks!

Hi deedeedee,

I don't believe you're suppose to change your FAFSA status to graduate level because a post-bacc program is considered '5th year undergraduate' status. This is because all the course work done in this program only effects undergraduate GPA. It will either be calculated cumulatively to your undergraduate GPA or viewed as a supplement to it depending on certain medical schools. This is important because Financial Aid for graduate school is much higher and will only be distributed to an official graduate program where you earn graduate level credits. It is also an entirely different GPA that does not effect undergraduate GPA.

As for post bacc status, they want you to submit a form to clarify your post bacc status. This can be found here: http://www20.csueastbay.edu/students/financing-your-education/fin-aid/financial-aid-forms.html

Scroll down a little to 'Status Documentation Forms' and click on:
12/13 Post-Baccalaureate Status

It should automatically download a PDF file that you can save a copy to your computer. This form needs to be filled out, check off the box on when you plan on starting the PHAP and then sign and date on the bottom. It can be printed out and mailed or faxed to the Financial Aid Office.

Once they receive the form, the 'to do list' on your account will change from 'initiated' status to 'received' status.

Crap, I think I put graduate on my FASFA. How do i change it to undergrad? I've never done FASFA before and I am so confused.

Edit: Nevermind. I figured it out. The post bacc status form told me what questions on my FASFA I needed to change.

If I wanted to meet Dr. Oscar Wambuguh in person for advice or actually see an adviser in person before classes start, does anyone know how to do that? Should I just email PHAP? (I'm not sure if that's Dr. Oscar's actual email or if other people are answering. ) And I have the classes that I want...I just can't sign up for them until my transcripts are in. Oh well, despite that, who's excited to start? =D

I'm definitely excited to start, I have a crazy schedule at the moment and I'm not sure if I can handle 4 science classes in one quarter but we'll see. My summer internship is keeping me really busy at the moment. Also anyone figure out where they're going to live when school starts?
 
Commuting from home. Yay BART and shuttle. (Will be driving to BART, go to Hayward, and taking the shuttle. ) A pain? Yes. But at least I save money on rent. (Will be living with my mother.)

I might do something similar and live with my mom in San Jose, which is about a 30 minute commute. Saves on rent, plus I'm only scheduled for Mon-Thurs and will have a 3 day weekend to decide where else to stay.

What kind of summer internship are you doing? Do you have any suggestion for finding internship/clinical opportunity..etc (but not the typical hospital volunteer "candy striper" type) within east bay area ?

Would you mind something in South Bay, Santa Clara area? Not too idea...but I'm looking into an internship that allows shadowing and interpreting at the moment I can pass onto you as well.
 
I work in the Information Services department which is actually more technical than clinical. I found the internship from searching online and applied. There isn't any specific region that I know of to look for internships. I applied really early in January for various internships, and got a call back in early March for an interview for the summer internship.
 
hey, I have a quick question. For the post bac students, when we apply for on campus housing are we going to be allocated to freshman suites or do we have the options of choosing the graduating apartment places?

I know we are not considered graduate students, but are we considered first time freshmans?

If there is an option for transfer students (junior level & up) select that option. If not, go with Graduate apartments, I'm sure campus housing will recognize that. They wouldn't put you in the freshman dorms with the amount of units you've already completed.

Welcome! I'm sure there are a good portion of folks on here who are doing the Academic Enhancer cohort beginning this Fall 2012. Which is essentially the exact application process for Winter 2013. Did you have any specific questions?

I don't have too many questions, because the school sent me information on how to apply. I'm currently on vacation, so I'm waiting to get back home so I can send out my transcript. I just hope their decision doesn't take too long, because I'm really excited for this.

Two quick questions, I am looking at SallieMae right now for loans. Should I look at the loans for undergraduate students since with this program we are considered a 5th year undergrad? My other question is will there be an orientation before school starts? I would like one so that we get to meet each other.

I'm guessing the Stafford loans won't cut it? And I believe that it is undegraduate loans. If it were grad school loans, you wouldn't need to look at SallieMae. (Meaning more aid would be available.)
 
Yes, there will be an orientation, apparently Dr. Wambuguh will send out an email to everyone, I think the orientation is a few days before classes start, the 24th if i remember correctly.

I'm currently #5 on the waitlist for general biochem. Since I thought classes are essentially "guaranteed", does anyone know my chances of getting in for the fall? I'm assuming no one or hardly anyone will drop the class since everyone enrolled is in the program. Since biochem is a 3-quarter sequence, what would I do if I couldn't get in this fall? I was hoping to only be in the program for 3 quarters and not take summer classes next year, but I do need to take biochem so I'm not sure what my options would be.

Hey Milo, you can try emailing PHAP to see if they give you a different response than me. Because I can't add any class until my final transcripts with the stupid degree is in (won't even take a certificate of completion from my school to remove the block >.>) they told me it's first come first serve. Sadly. I'd talk it out with the advisers. You might want to also consider doing a UC Berkeley extension class along with this course load (I know several people that have done that) to do your biochem. (But I'd check in with PHAP for that of course. )

Well that sucks (both for your situation and mine) 🙁 I will call them to see if they give me the same answer. I thought all the classes are guaranteed...so yeah I guess not. Am I supposed to register for another class in case I don't get into biochem? Also, is the first quarter of biochem offered in the winter so I could start it then? Doing UC Berkeley extension seems like a big hassle that I'd like to avoid if at all possible.

You can take any other upper division course instead of biochem if you can't get in at all. Sadly, most of them are waitlisted right now as well. >.> But I'd still put myself on the waitlist. People do change their schedules within a week or so, even in a post bac I think. So if you're number five, I'd stay put, sign up for another class as a back up and go to class to see if you can take someone's spot that's not there.

Thanks for the advice. I realized I can't do Berkeley extension since they start in August and I can't move up there until September. Do you know if I can register for biochem at the Concord campus and still be waitlisted at the Hayward campus? The Concord campus doesn't have anyone registered for biochem, which seems a little weird to me.

Concord is a wheee bit far, so that's probably why no one signed up for it. I'm not sure about that, signing up for both and waiting on the waitlist. I don't see why not, but I'd check in with PHAP first. It should be okay though. Try registering for it and see if they kick you out.
