Hello im currently an undergrad at CSULB. I have been deciding on transfering to a UC, particularly UCR due to its UCR/UCLA program. Just looking at previous posts regarding the UC system, it is without question that UC's produce more matriculants into medical school so I have decided to transfer to a UC to better my chances of getting into med school. What are your opinions on this? Do you think I should transfer?

yes and do it as soon as possible. Counselors at CSU's are being told that their students can get into medical schools, its BS. My counselor told me that only 1 student at ucla med got accepted from a CSU last year and her EC list was extensive. the truth of it is, CSU's are not rigorous enough. the only reason med schools are saying that CSU students can get in to med school is to keep the CSU's quiet.

the thomas haider program is overrated, UCR is not the UC of choice. Your better off applying from a UC that gets some respect. Although I think UCR is okay, its not really regarded to have the same level of education as other UC's. Thats my 2 cents

Many CSU students do get into medical school. I know there must at least two that got into UCLA last year from a CSU, because I know someone (besides the one you mentioned who is currently there) who was accepted there (she ended up going to Cornell instead). I also got into medical school from a CSU. There was also someone in my class that got into UCI for med school, and another I know who got into USC. I can think of several others as well, so, it definitely happens.

It is true that going to a UC is likely to help your application, especially for the UC medical schools, but it is not as if going to a CSU means you won't be going to medical school. Additionally, you'll probably get better LOR's from a CSU since you actually get to interact with the professors.

OP, I wouldn't transfer to a UC just to look better for medical school.

You should definitely transfer to a UC. I went to a CSU and it was a terrible experience that no doubt also hurt my application. I was able to get into medical school, but during more than one interview, I was asked point-blank why I didn't transfer to a better school like "UCLA".

As someone that's been to a CSU, I have to agree. The education is not a rigorous as it should be and the extracurricular opportunities are extremely limited. While you do get to know your professors better, I have found that even at a CSU, not all professors seemed that interested in teaching or research, so I'm not sure that knowing them is entirely all that helpful.

UCR is a good choice if you'd be happy in the Thomas Haider program. There is significant competition, but odds are much more in your favor than with other California schools. For example, this year only about 70 applicants interviewed for 24 slots.

If your interest lies in other top 20 schools, it might be better for you to go to a more prestigious UC. A degree from Cal or LA will give you more of an edge than Riverside.

PM me if you have any questions, I just graduated from ucr and would be more than happy to help you plan if you do end up there.

I went to a UC for undergrad and am going to a CSU for grad school. I think one reason UC's have more matriculants into med school is because more people from UC's apply. When I was an undergrad I went to an info session about applying to med school and half of an auditorium was filled. At my CSU there were only 6 people.
I like that there are less people applying because I get more time from my advisor. I love the advisors at my CSU! At my UC I barely got the time of day. Also, the UC advisors told many of my fellow pre-meds that they couldn't make it and to give up. Not very supportive if you ask me. I asked an undergrad at my CSU about his experience and he really likes it. It seemed that at my CSU you actually have more research opportunities because less students are out gunning for one.
This is just my two cents. If you're doing well at your current school I wouldn't transfer. But you have to evaluate your own experience at CSULB and decide if you find it rewarding or not. Also if time is an issue for you make sure you won't lose too many credits during transfer.

there are two, count 'em, TWO Fresno state students on this board who got into UCSF this cycle. Do try to stop being a ****** on a public forum.

Thanks for the input everyone I really appreciate it.

pnoybballin- how difficult is it to transfer? Back in the day, transfers were allowed in prioirity of Community College >>> Other UCs >>> CSUs. Maybe it's changed?

Community Colleges still have the most priority over the UC and CSU transfers. The difficulty of transfering from a CSU is almost the same as applying straight out of high-school depending on which type of UC you apply to. UCLA and CAL are of course the most toughest to transfer into. There is information on transfer student acceptance rates for each of the UC's on the UC website.

Aside from matriculating into the medical schools of CA, how do you guys fair off CSU's matriculating out of CA?

this is something i am currently struggling with bc i was accepted in to UCR and CSUSB. For personal reasons CSUSB makes the most sense, but UCR makes more sense for my medical school goals. I want to accept but I am not sure i can. ugh

I went to CSULB and had no issues getting into medical school. Where you go to undergrad is such a small part of the process, what's more important is how well you do at that said school, plus your MCAT, and obviously all your EC's.

I am a current Geffen student, and many of my classmates went to CSUs, actually. Do UC's have better resources compared to CSUs? Most definitely, but you can get into medical school coming from a CSU, I'm an example of that.
