What is the job market like for CT, or actually all units of surgery? Other than that, Can you just walk into any hospital and ask for a job, or do you have to work yourself up from rural to metropolitan areas? What do you have to do to land a job like CT surg. in metropolitan area such as Chicago, NY, Los Angeles? LA in particular.

From what I have heard from several CT surgeons is that the market for them has greatly reduced, mostly due to advances in interventional treatment. Cardiologists can do a lot more than they could do just 10 years ago. The cardiac stent (a spring like gadget which opens up arteries) and better drugs (just to name a few) have decreased the need for more invasive procedures. However, if that is what you really want to do, I would not be deterred by market predictions, since they are usually not indicative of what will be happening ten years down the road.

But note that they are still licensed Gen Surgeons, which preserves some flexibility.

Eddie,
You raise a good point. I am just curious how things will change if the surgical curriculum is revamped to go to the 4 + 2 (or 3) model where people are only certified in a specialty and not general.

My two cents - I don't think the 4 + 2 thing will work.
